New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Quebec designated hitter Patrick Scalabrini hit a first-pitch home run to lead off the top of the fifth inning and break a scoreless tie. The stellar pitching continued as the Capitales took a 3-1 into the ninth inning before striking for seven runs as Quebec defeated New Jersey 10-1 to sweep the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon.

New Jersey reliever Ted Serro came on to start the ninth and lasted just a third of an inning. The righty surrendered seven runs (six earned) on five hits while walking two. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Capitales second baseman Alex Nunez smoked a three-run double to right field to make it 6-1 Quebec. Catcher Patrick D'Aoust made it 7-1 with a sacrifice ground out. Two batters later, a throwing error by Jackals shortstop Ramon Nivar capped the scoring at 10-1.

With Quebec leading 1-0 following the Scalabrini home run, third baseman Patrick Deschenes lifted a sixth inning sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Capitales. In the seventh inning, Scalabrini homered again to put Quebec on top 3-0. In the bottom of the seventh, an RBI double by Jackals designated hitter Luke Allen scored second baseman Marcus Sanders to cut the Quebec lead to 3-1. That's as close as the Jackals would get. New Jersey starter Isaac Pavlik (1-2) took the tough-luck loss. Pavlik surrendered three runs on six hits over seven innings on the mound. Erick Nadon, Quebec's 22-year-old starter, picked up his first career win allowing a run on two hits with eight strikeouts in eight innings. New Jersey didn't strand any runners on base in the contest.

The Jackals enjoy their first scheduled off day tomorrow before beginning a six-game road trip on Friday night with the first of three games against the Sussex Skyhawks. First pitch from Skylands Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. If you can't make it out to the game, you can catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the pregame show beginning five minutes prior to the start of the game.
