
Pirates Win Again in a Shootout

CHARLOTTE, NC - Corey Tropp scored the shootout game winning and David Leggio turned aside four of the five shooters he faced as the Portland Pirates ran their winning streak to four games with a 4-3 victory over the Charlotte Checkers in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,417 at the Time Warner Cable Arena.
Luke Adam, Mark Parrish and Derek Whitmore scored in regulation for the Pirates, who improved to 9-2-0-0 with the third straight road victory. Colin Stuart collected an assist to run his point-scoring streak to six games (3-3-6) while Paul Byron also collected an assist to extend his streak to four games (four assists).
Chris Terry paced the Checkers with two goals, including the tying goal on a six-on-four advantage with one second remaining in regulation. Nick dodge netted the other goal for the Checkers, who dropped to 3-6-1-1 on the season.
Adam, who also scored in the shootout, opened the scoring to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the opening two minutes of the game but Charlotte got back on even terms with a power-play goal by Terry five minutes later and the opening period ended tied at one. Dodge gave the Checkers a 2-1 lead six minutes into the second but the Pirates answered with a pair before the end of the period as Parrish and Whitmore found the back of the net to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead heading into the third. Terry forced the overtime with his final second goal.
The Pirates out shot the Checkers 39-27 in the game as Leggio earned his fifth straight victory.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were 1. Terry; 2. Tropp and 3. Charlotte goalie Mike Murphy.
The Pirates complete a four-game road trip Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the second of back-to-back games against the Charlotte Checkers. The game can be heard live on News Talk 95.5 WLOB and on-line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
The Pirates will be back in action at the Civic Center on Friday (November 5th) when the Adirondack Phantoms come to town for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff. All fans will receive two free tickets to a future Pirates game with a donation to Goodwill. It's also United Way Night. As part of the pre-game, a check presentation will be made to the United Way of Greater Portland representing funds raised through the Pirates involvement in the current United Way Campaign. Saturday it's a Bud Light Hockey Night in Portland when the Pirates host the Providence Bruins at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center.
