Portland Pirates News Release

St. John's, Newfoundland - Five different skaters recorded goals with 11 tallying at least a point to lead the St. John's IceCaps to a 5-1 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League game played this evening in front of 6,247 at the MileOne Centre.

John Albert, Riley Holzapfel, Jason King, Brett Festerling and Travis Ramsey each found the back of the net and Edward Pasquale stopped 28 Portland shots as the IceCaps improved to 5-1-1-0 on the season.

Kyle Chipchura scored a goal in his second consecutive game and Curtis McElhinney stopped 36 St. John's shots as the Pirates dropped to 2-4-0-1.

The Pirates would jump out on top, midway through the opening period, with Chipchura tallying his second of the season on a five-on-three power play to give the visitors their only lead of the contest. As soon as the second period began, the St. John's offense picked up steam and blitzed a Portland team that had issues staying out of the penalty box. Nearly four minutes into the second frame, Albert beat McElhinney on a one-timer from the left circle to give the former Ohio State Buckeye his first career professional goal. After not capitalizing on five previous power play opportunities, the IceCaps converted on their next two man advantage chances, with Holzapfel connecting on his fourth goal of the season on a rebound and King beating McElhinney to his stick side during a four-minute high sticking penalty to Matt Watkins. At the end of the second period, the IceCaps led the Pirates in shots 32-14. St. John's would seal the game on a pair of wrist shots from the blue line by Festerling and Ramsey. Ramsey's goal was his first since the 2009-10 season with the Manitoba Moose.

The IceCaps out-shot the Pirates by a 41-29 margin as Edward Pasquale earned the victory in his first start of the season. McElhinney received the loss in net for Portland, falling to 1-3-0 on the season.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from St. John's: 1. Holzapfel; 2. Albert; 3. Pasquale.

The Pirates will wrap up their two-game road series against the IceCaps tomorrow evening (Wednesday) at 6:00 p.m. EDT (7:30 p.m. NDT) and fans can catch all of the action with broadcaster Jeff Mannix on the Portland Pirates Radio Network 95.9 WPEI and 95.5 WPPI.
