Massachusetts Pirates News Release
WORCESTER, MA - The Massachusetts Pirates, the defending champions of the Indoor Football League, have signed one of the University of Missouri's all-time receivers in Johnathon Johnson. Johnson most recently had signed a contract and went to camp with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League last season.
Before signing with the BC Lions, the 5'10", 185 lb. wideout from Memphis, TN spent time in The Spring League with the Jousters and went to camp with Washington of the NFL in 2020 as an undrafted free agent.
At Missouri, Johnson finished his collegiate career sixth all-time in receiving yards with 1,290 and eighth with 153 receptions. He appeared in 46 games for the Tigers and scored 13 touchdowns, averaged 14.3 yards per catch and 47.6 receiving yards per game. Johnson was also a kick returner averaging 15.6 yards (172 yards on 11 returns) and ran back punts where he had one touchdown in 29 chances compiling 229 yards.
After redshirting in 2015 due to an injury, he earned SEC All-Freshman Team honors the next season with 24 receptions for 435 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games. He also ran for 114 yards on four carries and had a punt return for a touchdown.
In 2017 Johnson left no doubt that he was a long distance threat as he scored six touchdowns with four going for 65 yards or longer. In 2018 as a junior he had career bests with 59 receptions and 737 yards. He finished the year with a dazzling performance in the Liberty Bowl against Oklahoma State as he set Mizzou records for the longest touchdown reception in a bowl game catching an 86 yard pass from quarterback Drew Lock. His 185 receiving yards (on nine catches) were also a Missouri bowl game best.
In his final season he was slowed by injuries and only appeared in eight games. Still Johnson managed 29 receptions for 294 yards. At the end of the year he was selected and took part in the East-West Shrine Game.
