Massachusetts Pirates News Release
WORCESTER, MASS. -- The Massachusetts Pirates have announced the team has re-signed quarterbacks Sean Brackett and Alejandro Bennifield for the 2021 season. Brackett was named the 2018 NAL MVP in the Pirates' inaugural season and was a Second-Team All-NAL performer in 2019. Bennifield started one game for the Pirates in 2019, a game that resulted in a victory and four touchdown passes.
Pirates Founder, President and General Manager Jawad Yatim is thrilled to bring his starting quarterback back for another season. "Sean's been a great ambassador for the Massachusetts Pirates since we first began as an organization, as well as being a productive player for us on the field. Extremely hard worker and dedicated to his craft, his skill set translates well to the IFL given the adjustments we will have to make from a rule and gameplay standpoint. He's one of our leaders and certainly glad to have him back on board."
Yatim spoke about Bennifield and how he compliments Brackett as another throwing option. "Alejandro has NFL arm talent, can make any throw in the game, indoors or outside. He's a great guy to have in the locker room, works hard and is accountable. Him and Sean work well together and we will need both of them this upcoming season, there's no doubt about that."
When asked about returning to the Pirates, Brackett has a championship season on his mind. "It feels great to be back. Home is where the heart is. I live here year round, have my teaching and coaching jobs here, as well as my quarterback coaching business. This is going to be my third year playing for Massachusetts and being able to play at home for a great, first class organization is the cherry on top. I look forward to leading the Pirates to a championship season with my brothers."
Last month, the Pirates announced the team will be moving from the National Arena League to the Indoor Football League next season. Brackett understands the IFL is going to be different. "I'm all for the move to the IFL. I hope we can get it going to being a true national TV contract and all that comes with it. I know Jawad has a vision and I think the IFL is aligned with that. I'm definitely excited to get back to what I do best, which is being a true dual-threat quarterback - in the shotgun and zone read, run-pass-option game. This is stuff I've been doing since I was in high school."
Before joining the Pirates in 2018, Brackett played in the Arena Football League for three seasons with the Las Vegas Outlaws, Jacksonville Sharks and Washington Valor. He also played in the China Arena Football League in 2016 for the Qingdao Clipper and was invited to the Canadian Football League's Saskatchewan Roughriders 2018 minicamp. Brackett played college football at Columbia University and grew up in Brooklyn, Connecticut.
Like Brackett, Bennifield has been with the Pirates since their inaugural season in 2018. Prior to joining Massachusetts, Bennifield was invited to the New Orleans Saints' rookie minicamp. He also played for the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football and in Your Call Football League. Bennifield played college football at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and is a native of Lovejoy, Georgia.
