Portland Pirates News Release

Worcester, M.A. - Shorthanded goals continued to play a major part of the Portland Pirates (3-5-0-0) game plan Wednesday night when they scored two en route to a 4-3 victory over the Worcester Sharks (4-2-1-0) at the DCU center in Worcester. The game was the Pirate's first win on the road since March 14 last season.

The game started out hot, with five goals between the two teams in the first period. Portland drew first blood at 5:52 when Tobias Rieder netted a goal, his third of the season, assisted by captain Alex Bolduc and Justin Hache. They added to their lead almost 10 minutes later with a shorthanded goal from Jordan Martinook, assisted by Tyler Gaudet, at 15:47. It was Gaudet's first professional point, Portland was killing a Darian Dziurzynski fighting major.

Not even a minute later, the Sharks answered back with a power play goal from Matt Tennyson, assisted by Matt Taormina and Eriah Hayes at 16:37. Worcester evened the score at two a couple minutes later, with Michael Haley firing in a goal at 16:53 with Ryan Carpenter and Melker Karlsson getting the assists. The tie wouldn't last long, however, with Portland's Lucas Lessio finding the net at 18:29 with assists from Brendan Shinnimin and Jordan Szwarz.

The Pirates headed into the second period defensive of their one goal lead, eager to pick up their first win on the road. Shinnimin provided Portland with a little security with a 15:15 shorthanded goal assisted by Phil Lane, while killing a Mark Louis high-sticking double minor.

The Sharks attempted a comeback late in the third period with a goal at 17:25 by Eriah Hayes, assisted by Daniil Tarasov and Freddie Hamilton. The Pirates were able to hold off further advances from Worcester, and maintained a 4-3 lead through the final buzzer.

It was a good night in goal for Portland net minder Louis Domingue (2-1-0) who saved 31 shots, allowing 3. Troy Grosenick (4-2-1) was between the pipes for the Sharks and saved 21, allowing 4.

The Pirates return home Friday night, October 31 to celebrate both Halloween and Portland Pirates Day. They will take on the St. John's Ice Caps at 7 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena. They hit the road again Sunday, when they will travel to Albany, N.Y. to take on the Devils at 3 p.m. For game tickets and further information call 207- PIRATES or visit us at portlandpirates.com.
