Pirates End Penguins' Road Streak with Shootout Win

PORTLAND, Maine - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins incurred their first blemish on their 2011-12 road record with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Portland Pirates on Friday at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The defeat was the first suffered by the Penguins in nine road games this season and ended a 12-game regular season road winning streak dating back to 2010-11.

With the score 2-1 and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton skating 5-on-4 in the third, Ben Street knotted the match with a wrist shot from the near circle that found its way over the shoulder of Curtis McElhinney and under the crossbar. That would be the last bit of scoring through regulation and overtime.

In the shootout, Ryan Duncan and Colin McDonald traded goals in round one before Brett MacLean notched the go-ahead marker in the fifth frame. McElhinney would deny Jason Williams' ensuing bid to give the Pirates the win.

Despite being outshot 14-3 in the first period, the Pirates were able to take 1-0 edge with 4:29 left when Maxim Goncharov completed a perfectly executed 2-on-1 with Jordan Szwarz.

The Penguins tied the score at 9:11 of the second just as a Portland man-advantage came to an end. With Brian Gibbons applying pressure on the forecheck, the Pirates' clearing attempt bounced off his shin pad and into the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Portland took back its lead six minutes later as Andy Miele sent a backdoor feed that Michael Stone into snapped the top corner for a power play tally.

Scott Munroe made 20-of-22 saves through overtime, while McElhinney stopped 35 shots.
