Massachusetts Pirates News Release

The Massachusetts Pirates have brought back one of their most lockdown defenders from the last two seasons defensive back Aarion Maxey-Penton. The 5'10", 190lb DB currently holds multiple Pirates records including the most total passes defended with 37, tied for the Pirates all-time inceptions record of 12 takeaways with Kiante Northington, the most interception yards of 261 and returned the most interceptions for a touchdown with 3.

The St. Louis, MO native finished the 2022 season being selected to the All-IFL First Team after he recorded 72 total tackles (47 solo, 25 asst) with 7 interceptions (lead IFL) and two of those ran back for a "pick-six." His dominant play during Week 19, the final regular season game, was awarded by being named the IFL's Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded an interception that was run back for a 52-yard touchdown and racked up 2.5 tackles with two broken-up passes.

"AMP" as he's known around the team, was a key contributor to helping the Pirates win the United Bowl at the end of the 2021 season. He made pivotal plays in the big game to help the Pirates clinch the win by tipping a pass that led to an interception, had an interception of his own, and recovered a fumble in overtime that would set up the Pirates game-winning drive. During the regular season, Maxey-Penton had a team-high 7 interceptions, two of them for touchdowns.

Prior to joining the Pirates, the University of Missouri alum played in the Spring League for the 2019 season. In addition, he spent time in the Canadian Football League for the Montreal Alouettes in 2019 and the Ottawa Redblacks in 2018. Maxey-Penton went undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft but was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams and spent time with the organization before being released.

Collegiately, Maxey-Penton balled out for the Tigers, especially during his senior season when he was named to the All-SEC First Team. After that season, Pro Football Focus added his name to their midseason All-American list, which included future NFL stars, Lamar Jackson and Dalvin Cook. Maxey-Penton finished playing 51 games and tallied 154 total tackles (110 solo, 44 asst), 8 tackles for loss, 41 passes defended with 10 interceptions. He finished his career 7th all-time for total career interceptions.

Maxey-Penton will look to continue his success with the Pirates organization and help the team dominate once again in the secondary.
