Pirates Better Pulaski 9-6

The Bristol Pirates won their second home game of the season on Monday night, as they defeated the Pulaski Yankees 9-6 in the first of a two-game series.

Making his second start of the season, 2017 first round pick Shane Baz held the Yankees to just one hit and no runs scored over the first three innings. Baz ran into trouble in the fourth inning, allowing three runs while recording only one out before being relieved by Adonis Pichardo. Baz ended the night with three runs allowed on four hits and two walks while striking out five over 3 1/3 innings.

Vince Deyzel earned the win on Monday night to improve to 2-0 on the year. Deyzel allowed only one hit over two scoreless innings while striking out a career-high five batters. Former Carson-Newman College pitcher and 2018 draft pick Will Gardner allowed one hit and one walk over two innings while striking out four to earn his first career save.

2018 draft pick Jonah Davis had his first career extra-base hit with a lead-off double in the first inning, and he would go on to hit another double in the sixth inning to give the Pirates back the lead 7-6. Davis later launched his first career home run to put the Pirates up 9-6 in the eighth inning, and finished the night 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. 2017 second round pick Conner Uselton hit his first career triple in the third inning, as he finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

Victor Ngoepe also had a three-hit night for the Pirates, finishing 3-for-4 with a walk, one RBI, one run scored and a stolen base. His one-out single in the sixth extended the Pirates lead to 8-6 after Bristol entered the inning trailing 6-5.

The Pirates (4-3) will face the Yankees Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the final game of the two-game series. Roger Santana will get the start after allowing four runs over 3 1/3 innings on Friday against the Twins while being tagged with his first loss of the season. Following the series' conclusion, the Pirates will have a day off on Wednesday before starting a six-game road trip at Princeton on Thursday.
