Portland Pirates News Release
Knight Scores Pirates Only Goal in Pirates 2-1 Overtime Loss Rochester, NY - The Portland Pirates (29-19-2-0) suffered their second overtime loss of the season, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Rochester Americans (24-24-2-1) by a score of 2-1 on Friday night at Blue Cross Arena. It was the first game Portland has played in Rochester since February 21, 2010, a game in which the Amerks won 3-2 in a shootout.
Daniel Catenacci broke through goaltender Sam Brittain at 2:49 of the second period when he collected a pass from Jason Akeson who was in the right wing corner and fired the puck in the top right corner. Chad Ruhwedel collected the other assist on the forward's first goal since being reassigned by the Buffalo Sabres and eighth of the season.
The Pirates grabbed the equalizer before the end of the period when Corban Knight deposited a goal on Linus Ullmark off a quick three-pass sequence. The play was started by a John McFarland rush down the left wing. The forward, reassigned to Portland earlier in the day by the Florida Panthers, sent a pass in front to Rob Schremp, who one-timed another pass across the slot to Knight, who notched his second of the season.
Sixty-minutes wasn't enough for the two teams but the three-on-three overtime didn't even hit the halfway point before Akeson finished off a two-on-one feed from Cal O'Reilly. Ruhwedel picked up his second assist of the night on the play.
Ullmark stopped 43 shots in the win to improve to 5-6-0 on the season. Brittain stopped 36, but takes the overtime loss, dropping to 6-8-1 for the year.
The Pirates continue their seven-game road trip against the Toronto Marlies Saturday afternoon at the Air Canada Centre, with faceoff for the matinee showdown at 1:30 p.m. Jeff Mannix calls all the action starting at 1:10 with the Pirates Pregame Show, served by Dunkin Donuts, on the WPEI Portland Pirates Radio Network, Presented by Napa Auto Parts, on 95.9/95.5 FM.
