Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
CORVALLIS, OR - Zach Draper (College of Idaho) pitched six innings of quality work on Sunday night and the Yakima Valley Pippins provided a late spark offensively for a series-clinching 7-3 win over the Corvallis Knights at Goss Stadium.
Draper returned to the game in the 3rd inning after a 1-hour, 13-minute rain delay, earning his West Coast League high 6th win of the season. Yakima Valley (19-14, 4-2) posted 15 hits in the winning effort, including a season best four hits from Mitchell Morimoto (Arizona).
Before the rain delay, the Pippins jumped out 2-0 in the 2nd inning featuring an RBI groundout from Freddy Smith (Cal State Northridge) along with an RBI base hit from Morimoto.
Following the break, Draper returned to the mound and went right back to form, allowing just two hits, striking out five, increasing his scoreless streak against the Corvallis Knights to 13.1 innings over his last two starts. Then in the bottom of the 6th inning, the Pippins would double their lead, 4-0, on a pitch-hit 2-RBI single by Ryan Garcia (UCLA).
The Pippins would add one more run in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings led by two RBIs in those frames from Trevor Achenbach (Oklahoma Wesleyan) putting Sunday's rubber match out of reach. Tanner Simpson (Lewis-Clark State College) allowed three runs in two innings of relief, setting up Connor Zwetsch (Oregon) for the final inning of work.
Yakima Valley returns to action Monday night for a non-league contest against the Perth Heat as the first 750 fans in attendance will receive one free 2016 Pippins Team Poster. Fans can listen to all the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Pippins Baseball.
