Gresham GreyWolves News Release
GRESHAM, Oregon - GreyWolves Jeffrey Mitchell Jr. (UC Berkeley) and Ryan Smith (Southern Illinois) were selected as members of the West Coast League All-Star team the league announced on Monday. The outfield duo marks the first All-Star selections in team history.
Jeffrey Mitchell Jr. got his season off to a hot start way back in early June and hasn't looked back since. Mitchell ranks in the league's top 10 and leads Gresham with a .330 batting average. His 33 hits on the year are good for fourth in the WCL, while his .427 on-base percentage ranks second. Mitchell was the league's Player of the Week for the first week of the summer, going 11-for-20 (.550) with seven runs scored and five RBIs. Mitchell appeared in 25 games as a freshman at Cal, scoring five runs on the season.
Ryan Smith, along with Mitchell, also ranks in the league's top 10 with a .317 batting average on the year. He is among the league leaders in numerous categories including hits (t-4th, 33), walks drawn (t-3rd, 18), on-base percentage (5th, .422). Smith has also been a constant defensive presence in Gresham's outfield. The junior has started more games and recorded more put outs than any other outfielder in the West Coast League. He transferred from San Joaquin Delta CC to Southern Illinois for the Spring 2016 season and accumulated a .449 slugging percentage for the Salukis.
