Red-Hot Corvallis Hands GreyWolves Second Straight One-Run Loss

Gresham GreyWolves News Release

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The streaking Corvallis Knights won their sixth straight game on Tuesday night, sneaking by the Gresham GreyWolves for a 3-2 win at Goss Stadium. The one-run loss was Gresham's (13-9, 24-25 overall) second in as many nights, while also marking its third one-run defeat in its last four losses.

Tonight's game was a pitcher's duel from the jump, with just one total run being scored in the first four and a half innings. That run was provided by Washington product Jack Johnson, who was the second man to the plate in the top of the first.

Johnson promptly went yard against Corvallis (12-10, 30-19) starter Cameron Bishop (UC Irvine), taking advantage of a 1-1 pitch to stake the GreyWolves to a 1-0 advantage. The home run was Johnson's third of the summer.

After being stymied early by starting pitcher Spud Heideman, the Knights broke through for two runs in the fifth. Despite a stellar performance from the pitching staff the rest of the way, that pair of runs gave the home team a lead they would never relinquish.

Corvallis would go on to scratch across one more run in the seventh, but Gresham wasn't done.

Justin Barchus' club pulled to within 3-2 after a Will Matthiessen (West Linn HS/Stanford) RBI fielder's choice in the eighth, and actually had the go-ahead run aboard in the form of Matthiessen in that inning. Ultimately, however, the comeback was not to be.

A quiet pop out in foul territory ended the team's eighth inning rally, and a 1-2-3 ninth gave the Knights the 3-2 win. As a result of the defeat, the GreyWolves' postseason elimination number now stands at two, meaning any combination of Yakima Valley wins or Gresham losses adding up to two will eliminate the team from playoff contention.

The GreyWolves will look to get back to their winning ways on Wednesday for game two against Corvallis. First pitch is slated for 6:40 p.m. at Goss Stadium.
