WALLA WALLA, Wash. - After losing to the Walla Walla Sweets in 11 innings on Monday, the Pippins picked up a 2-1 win in 10 innings over Walla Walla Thursday in front of 1,902 fans at Borleske Stadium.

Yakima Valley (17-10, 14-8 West Coast League) got out to an early 1-0 lead by way of two bunt singles, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI groundout from Reid Martinez.

The Sweets responded with an unearned run against Pippins starter Andrew Woods in the bottom of the 4 th on an RBI double from Andrew Mendenhall, who went 4-4 on the night. Mendenhall had four of the Sweets five hits on the night, with Jarod Gonzales collecting the only other hit of the night for Walla Walla.

That run would be one of Woods' few blemishes in his 6 1/3 innings of work, giving up the unearned run on four total hits, while not surrendering any walks and striking out eight.

Kenny Rosenberg took over for Woods in the 7 th inning and would keep the Sweets bats quiet. He found himself in a jam in the 9 th, giving up a one-out double to Mendenhall, before inducing a fly out and a strike out to get the game to extra innings.

In the 10 th, the Pippins made their mark. Alex Guenette led off getting hit by a pitch from reliever Jesse Houser. Shawn Wardian then reached on a bunt single, which also included a throwing error from Houser that moved Guenette to 3 rd. After a Justin Jacobs strikeout, Mitch Skaggs stepped up, driving a single into left field to score Guenette and give the Pippins a 2-1 lead.

Nick Kern relieved Rosenberg in the bottom of the 10 th and struck out the side, completing a 14-strikeout night between the three Pippins pitchers. The 14 strikeouts were a staff season-high.

The Pippins have answered a two-game losing streak from earlier in the week with a two-game winning streak to even the season series with the Sweets at 2-2.

The two clubs meet for a special Fourth of July matinee Friday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Beau Kerns is slated to start on the mound for the Pippins, going for a third straight win.
