Rogues Drop Extra Inning Thriller

July 4, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Medford Rogues News Release

MEDFORD, OR - The Medford Rogues were unable to get back to their winning ways as they fell to the visiting Bend Elks 6-4 this afternoon at Harry and David Field. The Rogues now slip to 12-10 in league play while the Elks improved to 15-11 and jump above the Rogues into second place of the South Division.

The Rogues once again found themselves behind in the first inning as the Elks grabbed a 2-0 lead before catcher Tanner Lubach came in off a Nathan Etheridge double to pull one back. Lubach had an outstanding game for the Rogues with a 3-4 afternoon, bringing his average for the season sits at .386.

It was through Blaine Tanner that the Rogues were finally able to draw level as Tanner stole home in order to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth. Tanner was another standout for the Rogues especially on defense with his massive double play in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded. Tanner managed to dive in front of a low drive before throwing from the ground to Yuto Kata on second who then threw to Victor Garcia on first and made sure the Rogues stayed in contention for the win.

On offense, designated hitter Nathan Etheridge led the Rogues with three hits in five at bats and two RBI's. Etheridge's average for the season now sits at .369.

The Rogues only held the lead once the entire game by going up 3-2 in the sixth before the Elks led 4-2 top of the seventh. The Rogues managed to draw level again at 4-4 and the game stayed that way into the tenth inning. Unfortunately, a massive two run homer gave the Elks the final 6-4 score and the win for the day.

Rogues starting pitcher David Peterson went a strong six innings, scattering seven hits while striking out six and allowing two runs. The loss went to reliever Matt Loeffler (0-2), who pitched the tenth. Elks reliever Jesse Pratt (2-0) got the win while Kevin sheets picked up his sixth save of the year for Bend.

The Elks and the Rogues will meet again tomorrow at Harry and David Field in another league contest between the two teams. Game time is set for 6:35p.m.
