Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - On the penultimate day of the 2015 regular season, the Pippins saw their wild card hopes end with a 2-1 loss to the Wenatchee AppleSox.
Pitchers played a big role in Saturday's game, with each starter only allowing one run in the 2 nd inning. Wenatchee (24-29) got its run off of Darrion Simons on an RBI single from Drew Helmstadter. Meanwhile, the Pippins (28-25) countered with a two-out, RBI double from Dayton Provost to re-tie the game.
Simons and Wenatchee starter Zach Haggett dueled it out through the middle innings, continually working out of jams to keep the game even.
The AppleSox finally broke through in the 7 th against reliever Zach Wolf. After a two-out walk, Keston Hiura brought in the go-ahead run with a triple to right-center.
The Pippins had a good chance to tie the game in the 8 th, with two runners aboard and one out, but struck out back-to-back times to end the threat.
Simons, in his final start of 2015, finished with 5 2/3 innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. He finished tied with Andrew Woods (2014) for most single-season strikeouts in Pippins history (58).
The loss takes Yakima Valley out of playoff contention heading into the final day of the regular season, but the Pippins look to send out 2015 in winning fashion Sunday at 7:05 pm on fan appreciation night at County Stadium. The Pippins will honor their fans with festivities all night long, as well as a Scott T. Pippins bobblehead giveaway and a postgame fireworks show. Tickets are available at PippinsBaseball.com, on the phone or at (575)-HITS.
