Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Valley Pippins scored one run in the 8th inning but that was not enough on Celebrate America Night at Yakima County Stadium, falling 3-1 against the Corvallis Knights.
Freddy Smith (Cal State Northridge) contributed one of his three hits on Sunday night in the frame, scoring Mitchell Morimoto (Arizona) with two outs in the 8th inning. The Pippins (15-12) would then get base hits from Jay Schuyler (San Diego) and Michael Filia (UC Irvine) to extend the ballgame in the 9th inning, only to strand the tying runners on base.
Following Sunday night's loss, the Pippins wrapped up their first half of the season, now needing Corvallis to lose four of its next five remaining games to secure the South Division Championship and an automatic playoff berth, featuring two of the next three games versus the Knights.
Ryan Garcia (UCLA) took the loss on the mound allowing two runs in the first inning, pitching just four innings overall, giving up six hits with four strikeouts.
Trent Schulte (Gonzaga) allowed one run in his two innings of relief as the Knights (14-8) scored an insurance run on a suicide squeeze bunt from Nick Kahle during the 5th inning.
Matt Fish (Lewis-Clark State College) threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, thanks in large part to a great defensive play from Michael Filia throwing out a Knights runner at the plate to end the 8th inning. Drake Atlee (Cal State Northridge) pitched the final two outs, inducing a line drive double play, improving his scoreless streak to six straight innings.
The Pippins and Knights return to action tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. as Yakima native Jens Jensen(Central Washington) will start on the mound for 4th of July. Fans can listen to all the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Yakima Valley Pippins Baseball.
