Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - Following a season-low three-hit performance Tuesday in Medford, the Yakima Valley Pippins returned to County Stadium Wednesday and rediscovered their offensive ability with a 10-1 over the Thurston County Senators in a non-league game.
After a pair of scoreless threats in the first two innings, the Pippins (25-14 overall, 21-12 West Coast League) jumped all over Senators starter Nick Mailhot in the 3 rd inning, scoring seven times to break the game. Vince Fernandez kick started the scoring with a three-run home run just inside the right field foul pole. Soon after, JC Snyder and Troy LaBrie recorded back-to-back RBI triples. Ryan Yamane also drove in a run, while a wild pitch accounted for the seventh run.
Both teams exchanged runs in the 5 th, before the Pippins added two more runs in the 8 th on a two-run double from Mitch Skaggs. It was one of 12 hits for Yakima Valley, following the three hits Tuesday.
On the mound, the Pippins got four scoreless innings from starter Gabe Gentner, before Mitch Yada allowed just one run over four innings, and Austin Hansen worked a scoreless 9 th inning to finish the win.
Wednesday's game marked the sixth and final non-league contest for the Pippins, whose final 21 games are against West Coast League competition, including 15 against Eastern Division rivals.
The first three games in that stretch come Thursday-Saturday at County Stadium, as the Wenatchee Applesox make their second trip to County Stadium this season. The Applesox entered play Wednesday trailing the Pippins by 4.5 games in the WCL's East Division, and are currently in extra innings against Walla Walla. The Pippins, already in first place in the division, have a good opportunity to build a healthy lead in the division before the all-star break with a few wins over Wenatchee this weekend.
