New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals continued their downward trend in the South Division, with an 8-4 defeat at hands of the Elmira Pioneers. The Pioneers completed a three-game sweep over the Jackals with the victory.
For the third consecutive night, the Pioneers put the Jackals in an early hole, scoring two runs, and one as a result of an error by Jackal first basemen Matt Hagen. In the inning, Jeremy Booth notched an RBI on a groundout to second base. But the Jackals would respond in the next half inning, immediately. In his first at-bat with New Jersey, Izzy Alcantara homered to left field, to put the Jackals back into the contest.
In the top of the third, New Jersey took its first lead of the series after scoring two more. Ricardo Cordova and Elvis Corporan both collected RBIs in the inning that put the Jackals ahead 3-2. But it would be very short lived. A Samone Peters bomb to dead-center field put the Pioneers back in ahead, 4-3.
Elmira extended their lead by plating a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Jabe Berjeron smacked an RBI single, and scored when Peters doubled during the next at-bat.
A Steve Checksfield inside the park homerun in the top of the sixth, at the expense of Elmira centerfielder Jason Tuttle, brought the Jackals within two. While trying to make the play, Tuttle slammed into centerfield wall, and was removed from the ballgame.
But in the bottom of the seventh, Elmira finally put the ballgame out of reach against New Jersey's Fabricio Benitez. In his third inning of work, Benitez surrendered two more turns to the Pioneers, on RBI base hits by Jobu Morita and Derek Barrows.
The loss went to New Jersey's Josh Brey who struggled for the second consecutive start. Brey lasted only four innings, threw 99 pitches, while surrendering six runs, five earned, on nine hits and a walk.
Mike Howell of the Pioneers was the winner in six innings of work. He allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits, while walking one, and striking out two.
