Offensive Burst Fuels Spirit Victory

North Shore Spirit News Release

The Spirit offense gave Bryan Morse more than enough support on Wednesday, coming through with 20 hits including six home runs for a 16-2 shellacking of the New Haven County Cutters in the final game of the series.

Vic Davilla continued his hot hitting going 4-5 with three RBI and two runs scored while Garrett Weir, Andy Howdeshell, Alex Trezza and Yuri Sanchez each picked up two RBI.

After two straight losses to New Haven, the Spirit came out of the gate swinging on Wednesday afternoon. The batted around in the first inning and came away with a nine runs on nine hits.

With one out in the first, Rob Fischer drew a walk and then scored the first Spirit run on a double from Vic Davilla. Travis Olglesby followed with an RBI single, scoring Davilla from second. With one on and one out, Alex Trezza launched a two-run home run to put the Spirit ahead by four. They weren't even close to finished, however, as the hits just kept on coming. With the bases empty, Brian Macchi doubled and then scored on Andy Howdeshell's third home run in as many games. Agramonte followed that with a single, stole second, and then went to third on an error from the New Haven catcher. After walking in his first at bat, Fischer came away with a two-home homer in his second trip to the plate, giving the Spirit a 9-0 advantage after one.

The Spirit tacked on to their already sizeable lead with two more runs in the second inning. Yuri Sanchez scored pinch-runner Morse and Trezza with a single. Morse was pressed into duty when Howdeshell left the game after being hit by a pitch.

Howdeshell was hit in the head, and was taken to a local medical center to be checked out. Fortunately he was able to return to Fraser Field to rejoin his teammates in the eighth inning.

The Spirit had to juggle their defense for the rest of the game, moving Vic Davilla to third base for Howdeshell, and inserting designated hitter Olgesby into the game at first base. With no DH, Morse was called upon to bat and came away with one hit in two trips to the plate.

Despite the shortened bench, the Sprit showed no signs of slowing down, adding three more runs in the fifth inning. After Garret Weir led off the inning with a home run, Rob Fischer singled and scored on a two-run shot from Davilla.

The Cutters finally broke through with a run in the sixth, but the Spirit matched that in the bottom half of the inning on a home run from Agramonte.

New Haven added another run in the seventh, but once again the Spirit answered with another run in the eighth. Trezza led off the inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI single from Agramonte to close out the scoring for the day.

Not to be overshadowed in this game was the starting pitching performance from Morse. He allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out four to earn his 11th victory of the season for the Spirit (14-9). He lowered his league-leading RBI to 2.53. Jarrett Starwarz took the loss for the Cutters (14-10) allowing nine earned runs on nine hits in one inning of work.

With the Brockton Rox loss on Wednesday North Shore is now just 2.5 games out of first place.

The Spirit do not play on Thursday. They open a three game series with the Quebec Capitales on Friday night at the New Fraser Field. Game time on Friday is at 7 p.m., while the action kicks off at 5:15 on both Saturday and Sunday.
