Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, IA- Last Friday's fourth annual "Pink the Rink," presented by UnityPoint Health- Finley Hospital, was a resounding success. The evening helped gross just shy of $30,000 to support the fight against breast cancer. Generous community support from local individuals, businesses and the Fighting Saints post-game auction of special pink jerseys worn that evening, all played a large part in helping raise money towards fighting this disease that impacts one in eight women.

"We'd like to thank our fans for once again supporting a terrific cause," said Fighting Saints President Dan Lehv. "UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital, the Finley Health Foundation, the Wendt Regional Cancer Center and the Visiting Nurse Association are doing outstanding work in our community. I'd encourage fans that weren't able to attend Friday's game or to bid on a pink jersey to consider supporting the Finley Health Foundation, Wendt Center and VNA. For the fourth year in a row, our fans and community partners have made an impact that will help improve the level of care and access to screenings and treatment in our area."

Proceeds from the night benefited Finley Hospital's Wendt Regional Cancer Center and the Visiting Nurse Association. All proceeds from the post-game jersey auction went to the VNA. More than $7,000 was raised from the jersey auction for the VNA. The VNA's Women's Breast Health program provides financial assistance for mammograms and related breast and cervical cancer diagnostic services for Tri-State area women who would not otherwise be able to afford the tests.

The post-game jersey auction was just one highlight of the generosity shown by the Tri-State community. After the first period Friday, the Pink Ribbon Open presented a check for $6,000 to the Wendt Center to be used for the purchase of a breast board that is used in conjunction with the Linear Accelerator. The Annual Pink Ribbon Open, an event started by Doris Gorius in honor of her mother, raised these funds. The Pink Ribbon Open has a long history of giving back to the community, VNA and Finley Hospital, and recently completed its 14th Pink Ribbon Open event.

Dubuque Bank & Trust continues to support the fight against breast cancer with a gift presented to the Wendt Center. Funds raised in May & June through DB&T's Pink Ribbon Debit Card program totaled $2,472.95, and DB&T representatives presented a check for this amount. The Pink Ribbon Debit Card is exclusive at DB&T to promote breast cancer awareness, education, treatment and research. Overall, the Wendt Center has received $16,613.87 from this program.

Other key contributors presenting donations on Friday included the Clarke Association of Nursing Students (CANS) that raised $1,115 by selling pink t-shirts. Additionally, $500.00 was donated from Dubuque Senior High School football teams and fans. The team sold t-shirts to raise awareness about breast cancer and promote team spirit during the Senior-Hempstead inter-city football game. Rounding out the contributions for the fight against breast cancer was a gift of $500.00 from the Fraternal Order of Eagles 568.

Other funds raised at Pink the Rink include a portion of proceeds of all pink merchandise, including limited edition special pink Fighting Saints shirts, and game tickets sold at the Finley Hospital. Sponsorship of replica pink jerseys by individuals and businesses also helped raise funds for the Wendt Center.

The Wendt Center, celebrating its 26th Anniversary, is the Tri-State's sole provider of radiation oncology services. Annually, 500 new patients place their trust in the Wendt Center's skilled professionals and cutting-edge technology, allowing them to receive this potentially life-saving treatment near their homes.
