Newark Pilots News Release
The Newark Pilots (1-0) won their season opener by a final score of 9-6 over the Watertown Wizards (0-1) on Thursday at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. The victory is not only the first of the season, but the first as a team for the Pilots in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.
Pilots' pitcher Dominick Ruscitti (Kutztown) earned the first win of the season after throwing five scoreless innings in a long relief outing. Ruscitti took the mound in the third inning, and allowed only three hits and fanned six batters.
"[The Wizards] got some hitters, but I definitely got to tip my hat to our pitcher Dom Ruscitti, who came in and threw five good innings," said Head Coach Chris Ebright after the game.
Both teams got on the board early. Ray Delvalle (Kentucky Wesleyan) scored the first run of the game for Newark on a sac fly from DH Kyle Barkley (Finger Lakes CC). Watertown took the early in the bottom of the first inning after Kody O'Connor (LeMoyne) hit a two-run triple off of Newark's Carson Beauchaine (Saginaw Valley State). The Wizards were up 6-3 after two innings.
Newark gained the lead at the top of the fifth when Matt Vera (San Joaquin Delta) singled and later scored on one of five Watertown errors to go up 7-6. Watertown starter Justin Wiley (Iona) allowed one more run before the end of the frame.
"All around offensively, our guys played baseball," said Ebright. "We bunted, hit doubles, hit and run, we stole. I think that's going to be a plus side for us the whole season."
With the 9-6 lead heading into the eighth inning, Ebright sent closer Mark Scott (San Joaquin Delta) in to seal the deal. Scott struck out two while earning his first save.
Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta) led the Pilots with three hits, while Barkley had a team-high two RBI's. Watertown third basebman Jake McGuiggan (Harvard) was a 3-3 at the plate.
The Newark Pilots return to the road on Friday, June 10th to face the Cooperstown Hawkeyes (0- 1) at Doubleday Field. Game time is set for 5 p.m. Watertown travel to Colburn Park on June 17th for the Pilots' home opener at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the Wegmans located on West Miller Street in Newark.
