Amsterdam Mohawks News Release

The Albany Dutchmen made their way into Shuttleworth Park on Thursday night and shut down the host Amsterdam Mohawks 6-2 on opening night. It was the first game for both clubs in 2011 and one of four inaugural contests in the newly formed Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL). Starting pitcher Cameron Brewer (1-0) got the visiting team off to a fast start and lasted 5.1 shutout innings, he allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out nine en route to recording the victory.

Amsterdam starting pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. was tagged with the loss after he tossed 3.2 innings while surrendering three runs (all earned) on four hits. He stranded runners on second and third in each of the first two innings before yielding three earned runs in the third - the first two scoring on consecutive wild pitches. After the three-run third, the Dutchmen added on two more in the sixth on a pinch-hit two-run double off the bat of Garren Palmer.

Both Amsterdam runs came in the bottom of the ninth. The Mohawks loaded the bases with no outs before Josh Alexander drove in a run on a fielder's choice groundout. Demarcus Henderson then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2 with two outs and a runner on first. After Andrew Green reached on an error, Zach Shank ended the ball game with a groundout to shortstop.

The Mohawks are next in action on Friday night at 7:00 when they play at Glens Falls, while Albany opens its home schedule on Friday night at 7:00 when they host the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs.
