North Adams SteepleCats News Release
PLYMOUTH, Mass. - Plymouth scored four runs in the first four innings of the game, and that proved to be the difference in a game that North Adams was kept quiet offensively, as the SteepleCats fell, 4-1, on the road to the Pilgrims in a cross-divisional NECBL battle on Wednesday night at Forges Field.
Playing for just the first time in five days due to rain, the SteepleCats (8-10) could not overcome a slow start and were stifled by the Pilgrims' (5-11) pitching staff, finishing with just four hits on the night while suffering the season sweep to Plymouth.
SteepleCat starter Anthony Mannuccia (Hartford) yielded three runs over three innings on seven hits, while Plymouth southpaw Jeff Springs took the win after going the minimum, fanning three and walking five while allowing a run on three hits and two balks.
Out of the bullpen, Alex Farina was outstanding for the hosts, striking out six over three scoreless innings with one walk and no hits before Travis Stout locked up the save in the ninth. For North Adams, freshman Cristian Torres (Notre Dame) also offered two scoreless innings of relief, while sophomore Doug Willey (Notre Dame) kept the home side at bay in the eighth.
All but two of the Pilgrims' starters finished with at least one of the hosts' 10 hits, with Andrew Santomauro and Vin Guglietti adding two apiece. While North Adams saw three different players tally one hit.
The hosts did not wait long to grab an early lead, as Santomauro singled to start, stole second and later scored on an RBI single off the bat of Bobby Melley, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead after an inning of play.
An inning later, the Pilgrims tacked on two more thanks to a clutch two-out, two-RBI base hit from Jacob Robson, extending Plymouth's advantage to 3-0 after two.
Following a scoreless third, the home side added one more run against Mannuccia thanks to Santomauro's efforts. The leadoff man singled with one out, stole second and third and touched home plate on a fielder's choice to run up Plymouth's lead to four.
North Adams finally got to Springs in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-out rally. Sophomore John Razzino (Franklin Pierce) singled with two outs to start the charge, and after two walks and a pair of balks, Razzino was forced in to cut the deficit to three. But Springs fought back and induced an inning-ending fielder's choice before handing the game over to the bullpen, which kept the SteepleCats in check the rest of the way.
The SteepleCats return home for their annual Fourth of July Spectacular tomorrow to welcome Laconia for the first of two meetings this month. First pitch from Joe Wolfe Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
