New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
The Bay Sox beat the Mystic Schooners 9-5 Wednesday night at Fitch Field to give them their first back-to-back wins of the season.
A strong start from Sam Dodge (Harvard) and a 5-run 8th inning allowed the Bay Sox to get their seventh win of the season.
Dodge had a no hitter going into the fifth inning and finished with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing three hits and two runs.
The Bay Sox were up 2-0 before giving up 5 runs in the seventh.
They got 5 runs back in the top of the 8th thanks to a massive comeback started by Chris Shaw (Boston College).
Shaw came through in the top of the 8th inning with a bases loaded double to center field that tied the game at 5-5. Shaw advanced to third on the throw home and scored on a Matt Lopez single to center field (Lopez went 3-for-4 with 1 run and an RBI). The Bay Sox added two more runs to make it 7-5 going into the bottom of the 8th.
Dodge had a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh when he gave up a 1-out, 2-run homerun to Brandon Cipolla (Holy Cross) to tie the game.
That was Dodge's last pitch of the night as he turned it over to the Bay Sox bullpen.
New Bedford's bullpen couldn't get out of the 7th inning.
A combination of Tucker Forbes (UCLA) and Graig Weber (Bradley) gave up three runs, three hits and two walks to make it a 5-2 Schooner lead.
It was a pitchers duel until the top of the fifth when a single from Matt Lopez and back-to back 2-out doubles from Andrew Dundon (Marshall) and Shea Pierce (Sam Houston St.) made it 2-0 Bay Sox.
Nick Friar (Northwestern) was credited with the save allowing no runs on 4 hits in two innings.
The Bay Sox added two runs in the top of the ninth to make it a 9-5 final.
With the win, the Bay Sox are now 4-3 on the road and 3-9 at home this season.
New Bedford has July 4th off and visits Laconia on Friday.
