CHESTER, Pa. - Philadelphia Union announced today that Jon Scheer has been named Director of Scouting for the club. Scheer joins the first team technical staff after serving as the Union Academy's Director of Talent Identification.
In his new role, Scheer will continue to utilize his knowledge of the American market that has brought so many top talents to the Union Academy. His focus will include identifying first team talent in the United States while expanding and leading the club's scouting efforts internationally.
"We're excited to have Jon join the first team as Director of Scouting. He has incredible insight into the overview of the American market that has proven extremely valuable to the club," said Ernst Tanner, Union Sporting Director. "He did a fantastic job in our academy, solidifying it as the backbone of our first team roster and an assessment center for players throughout the club. Jon's promotion is further proof that our academy is a top place in the country where young players as well as staff develop their careers."
Scheer's new role as Director of Scouting comes after leading efforts that helped identify many of the top Union Academy talents and that helped accelerate its growth into the best development pipeline in MLS. Working closely with the academy and first team coaching staff, Scheer has brought in players with the mentality and skill to successfully complete the player pathway to the pros, from the academy to the first team roster.
"I am thrilled to continue this journey with the Philadelphia Union," Scheer said. "I am extremely grateful to Ernst Tanner, Chris Albright, Tommy Wilson, Richie Graham and so many others within the organization for this opportunity. I feel fortunate to be able to work for such a progressive club and am excited for what lies ahead."
