Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants lost to the St. Paul Saints on Saturday, 5-2. The Saints took three of four games from the Pheasants. It was the first time all year Sioux Falls lost a four-game series.
The Pheasants' first-place lead was shaved to just one game ahead of the Saints. Their 49-23 overall record remains the best in the American Association.
Saints starter Jacob Schmidt (8-5) stymied the Pheasants' bats with seven innings of two-run ball. He allowed six hits and struck out eight in the victory. Sioux Falls struck out 12 times total against the St. Paul arms.
Brandon Sing's two-run home run erased a 2-0 deficit for the Pheasants in the sixth inning. It was Sing's league-best 24th of the season, and it was his only hit of the game.
Josh Alley broke the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run triple over the head of right fielder Kevin Carby. Ole Sheldon added an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-2. Sheldon was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
For the second consecutive night, Saints closer Matt Meyer pitched a perfect ninth and notched his seventh save.
Pheasants starter Chris Salberg took a no-decision in a bid for his 10th win of the season. He lasted six innings, allowing just two runs. Ryan Grant (3-2) was handed the loss for allowing the three-run seventh inning.
The Pheasants begin a three-game series at home against the Lincoln Saltdogs at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday, August 1. It's Family Fun in the Sunday, where kids can run the bases after the game and players will be onfield for postgame autographs.
The Pheasants are members of the American Association, a 10-team independent professional baseball league playing its fifth season this summer. Individual and group ticket information is available by calling (605) 333-0179. Fans can also visit the Pheasants at www.sfpheasants.com.
