SIOUX FALLS -- Four Lincoln Saltdogs errors and Mark Shorey's go-ahead, three-run home run in the fifth inning led the Sioux Falls Pheasants to a 12-6 win on Thursday night.

Shorey broke a 6-6 tie with his first home run of the year, a giant shot that sailed over the right field fence to give the Pheasants a 9-6 lead.

The Pheasants were helped by early miscues from Lincoln. In the first inning, catcher Alan Rick threw the ball into left field on Jonny Kaplan's stolen base attempt. Kaplan scored for a 1-0 advantage.

An error by Saltdogs shortstop Joe Spiers in the second prevented a double play. A five-run rally ensued with three singles and a wild pitch. Jared Bolden capped the scoring with a bases-loaded, two-run single for a 6-0 lead.

"If they're going to give us chances and let us get on base we have to take advantage of that," said Pheasants hitting coach Andy Juday. "It comes down to putting balls in play and challenging them to make plays, fortunately today they kicked it around a bit and we capitalized on those errors."

Bolden was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Joe Anthonsen had his best night of the season. He was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI single in the second inning.

The Pheasants' early lead didn't last long. Lincoln stormed back in the fourth with five runs. John Alonso hit a two-run home run, and Joe Spiers hit a three-run double. The Saltdogs tied the game in the sixth on Brad Payne's RBI double.

"You never know what is going to happen, especially here, balls are going to fly," said Shorey.

Two more Saltdogs errors from the middle infielders added another run in the sixth, and Cesar Nicolas belted his second home run of the year, a two-run blast in the eighth inning for the 12-6 margin.

Matthew Sommo (1-1) earned the win for the Pheasants. He pitched six innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits, striking out two and walking two.

Chandler Barnard (0-2) took the loss for the Saltdogs. Barnard gave up nine runs, six earned, over five innings pitched, striking out three and walking two.

Game two of the four-game series is at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, June 1, at Sioux Falls Stadium. A Friday Night Fireworks show follows the game, sponsored by Sanford Health.
