
Pheasants' Big Innings Sink Wingnuts

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 11-5 to the Sioux Falls Pheasants at Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night.
The Pheasants utilized a pair of four-run innings to open a commanding 8-0 lead by the end of the fourth.
Sioux Falls scored four times in the bottom of the first inning against Wingnuts' starter Luke Massetti. Joe Anthonsen led off with a line drive single to center. Anthonsen stole second when Kevin Carby struck out and then took third on a throwing error by Jeff Christy. Reggie Abercrombie singled Anthonsen home on a groundball up the middle.
Abercrombie stole second and took third when Christy's throw bounced out of Josh Horn's glove and rolled toward the right side of the infield. Beau Torbert's groundball single through the right side brought in Abercrombie to make it 2-0. After Brandon Sing blooped a single down the right field line, Trevor Lawhorn hit a two-run double to straight away center field to open a 4-0 lead.
Sioux Falls broke the game open with another four-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Hunter Jobes drew a four-pitch walk leading off and advanced to second on Gus Milner's single through the left side. Will Richards slapped a double down the left field line that scored Jobes and Milner to make it 6-0 Sioux Falls.
Anthonsen singled through the left side, advancing Richards to third. Kevin Carby hit into an RBI fielder's choice at second that scored Richards and moved Anthonsen to second. After Abercrombie flew out to center for the first out of the inning, Torbert grounded a single through the left to extend the lead to 8-0.
The Wingnuts finally got on the board in the fifth. Pheasants' starter Chris Salberg allowed an infield single to Jeff Christy and issued a walk to Steve Pearson. Michael Bell drove in both with a double to left-center field. Shortstop Kevin Carby's errant relay throw to the plate allowed Bell to take third. Bell then scored on Michael Sharp's RBI groundout to third base, cutting the lead to 8-3.
The Pheasants got two of the runs back in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Carby and Abercrombie. Bell doubled home another run in the top of the sixth, to pull with Wingnuts within six runs. Sioux Falls got the run back on an RBI fielder's choice from Anthonsen in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Patterson collected an RBI single in the top of the ninth for the Wingnuts' last run.
Massetti went five innings in the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Salberg earned the win and gave up four earned runs on five hits in six innings, striking out four and walking five. Jorge Cortes doubled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
