Adirondack Phantoms News Release
PHANTOMS OPEN PRESEASON WITH 3-2 LOSS TO ALBANY
The Phantoms' four-game exhibition schedule began on Saturday with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Albany River Rats in front of a sellout crowd of 643 at the Polonia Bank Flyers Skate Zone in Northeast Philadelphia. Patrick Sharp and Joni Pitkanen each scored in regulation for Philadelphia, while Antero Niittymaki recorded 32 saves. Zach Parise and Bobby Allen tallied goals in regulation for Albany and Aleksander Suglobov netted the only successful shootout attempt to give the River Rats the win.
REMAINING PRESEASON SCHEDULE
The Phantoms and River Rats meet again at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at South Mountain Arena in West Orange, N.J. Philadelphia is back in action at home this Friday, Oct. 8 at 5:00 p.m., when they take on the Norfolk Admirals at the Sovereign Bank Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J. The preseason schedule then wraps up on Monday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m., when the Phantoms take on the Trenton Titans at Sovereign Bank Arena.
Tickets for the Oct. 8 game in Voorhees are still available and cost $10 per person, with a portion of the proceeds going to youth hockey programs. Tickets can be purchased at the Skate Zone, or by calling 856-309-4400. Call 609-599-9500 for ticket information on the Trenton game.
NEW SHOOTOUT RULE TESTED RIGHT AWAY
Philadelphia and Albany did not wait long to give the AHL's new shootout rule a try. The teams were tied at 2-2 through regulation and the five-minute overtime period in Saturday's preseason game, setting up their first experience at a shootout. Five players from each club were chosen to participate, and Aleksander Suglobov - the second River Rat to go - was the only person to score. Coming up empty in the shootout for the Phantoms were Mathieu Brunelle, Tony Voce, Joni Pitkanen, R.J. Umberger and Patrick Sharp.
FOURSOME SENT TO TRENTON
Following practice on Saturday, Oct. 2, the Phantoms returned left wing Ryan Watson and defensemen Ray DiLauro, Jerramie Domish and Evan Nielsen to Trenton of the East Coast Hockey League. Philadelphia is now down to 29 players in camp.
NIITTYMAKI ALLOWS FIRST GOALS AT NORTHEAST SKATE ZONE
Antero Niittymaki allowed his first-ever goals at the Polonia Bank Flyers Skate Zone in Northeast Philadelphia on Saturday. After posting a 3-0 win over Norfolk there in 2002 and a 3-0 victory over Bridgeport in 2003, Niittymaki finally let a puck past him at the 19:49 mark of the first period vs. Albany. The River Rats added another tally in the third period and beat him once during the shootout in their 3-2 triumph.
BRUNELLE & RUGGERI AT KIDS CLUB CLINIC
Left wing Mathieu Brunelle and defenseman Rosario Ruggeri will be helping out at the Phantoms Kids Club Clinic this Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the Sovereign Bank Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J. The hour-long event will be held at the facility's roller hockey rink.
