Saratoga Spine Player of the Week - Cal Heeter
Cal Heeter is the Saratoga Spine Player of the Week following his 35-save performance on Saturday night in a 3-1 victory at Binghamton. Heeter allowed a goal early in the game to the B-Sens and then slammed the door on the opposition the rest of the way. When Adirondack was clinging to a 2-1 lead and Binghamton was ramping up the pressure in the Phantoms' zone, Heeter made 18 straight saves in the second period alone to keep Adirondack in front.
The second-year pro from St. Louis was 12-16-3, 2.92, 908 with the Phantoms in his rookie season. Heeter comes to the team after a stellar four-year career with the Ohio State University Buckeyes.

October 25 - Tye McGinn (LW) loaned from Philadelphia to Adirondack
Last Week
Friday, October 25: Norfolk Admirals 3 - Adirondack Phantoms 0
Rookie goalie John Gibson is only 20 years old but he looked every bit the experienced and composed veteran in a 38-save shutout as Norfolk emerged from Glens Falls with a 3-0 victory. The highly touted World Juniors tournament MVP and Team USA Gold Medal winner recorded his second career professional win and first ever blank sheet making a number of acrobatic and lunging stops on the night.
Peter Holland scored twice for Norfolk and Max Sauve added another.
Kris Newbury blasted a third-period drive off the post and Chris VandeVelde was somehow robbed in the second period while Gibson came up with a glove save while on his belly in the crease. Bruno Gervais and Brandon Manning were both denied on powerful slapshots with Gibson showing off his long and quick wing-span on the robberies. And so it went in the Friday night game for an Adirondack team that had quality chances but suffered their first shutout loss of the season. Yann Danis took the loss for the Phantoms.
Saturday, October 26: Adirondack Phantoms 3 - Binghamton Senators 1
This time it would be the Phantoms goalie to steal the victory from the opposition's impressive attack. Cal Heeter made 35 saves on 36 shots including 18 straight in just the second period alone as Adirondack hung on for an exciting win at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Brandon Alderson (2nd), Kyle Flanagan (1st) and Jason Akeson (1st) all scored in the victory.
After Chris Wideman's power-play slapshot gave the host Senators the initial 1-0 lead midway through the first period. Heeter would emerge unscathed for the rest of the night. Binghamton's lead would not last long. Just 1:09 later Brandon Alderson snapped home his second goal of the year after Senators' rookie goalie Andrew Hammond had gone down. Later in the first period, Kyle Flanagan would notch his first of the season and second of his pro career somewhat similarly, snapping it into the upper portion of the net while Hammond was covering low.
Binghamton appeared on the brink of tying the game on several rushes in the second period and the Phantoms were barely clinging to the lead when yet another big Heeter stop would trigger a rush back the other way. Kris Newbury muscled his way through a Senators' defenseman and his shot off the pads of Hammond was scooped up by Jason Akeson trailing on the play to pot the pivotal tally.
Upcoming Opponents
Springfield Falcons (5-1-1) - Affiliation, Columbus Blue Jackets
Springfield overcame a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 shootout win in Glens Falls on Saturday, October 19. Now just 11 days later comes the rematch. The Falcons began the season 5-0-0 but dropped two straight to Providence 4-3 in a shootout and to Worcester 3-1. 22-year-old defenseman Tim Erixon, a former first-rounder of the Calgary Flames in 2009, leads the way in scoring with 2-7-9 for second-year head coach Brad Larsen.
Goalie Mike McKenna's wife is from the Glens Falls area.
It is Game #2 of the 8-game season series between the Northeast Division rivals.
Binghamton Senators (5-3-0) - Affiliation, Ottawa Senators
Binghamton handed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton their first loss of any variety last Friday night with a 4-3 shootout win and then fell to the hands of the Phantoms 3-1 in their home building on Saturday. Now the team that was frustrated continually by Cal Heeter's masterful performance in net gets their first opportunity to avenge the loss. Mike Hoffman, 4-4-8, is the team's captain and top scorer. Nathan Lawson has been their best goalie this year with 4-1-0, 2.25, .927 but Adirondack's victory on Saturday came against rookie back-up Andrew Hammond.
Albany Devils (5-2-1) - Affiliation, New Jersey Devils
It's the first of six Glens Falls visits for the Albany Devils in Game #2 of the 12-game season series. Albany took the debut meeting of the Northway Rivalry on Columbus Day, October 14, 4-1 down at Times Union Center on the strength of a pair of TIm Sestito goals. The Devils defeated Hartford 4-3 last Friday but then dropped a 5-2 decision to Portland the following night.
Center Scott TImmins leads the Devils in scoring with 5-5-10 and has 24 NHL games under his belt with the Florida Panthers. Speedy Joe Whitney from Boston College was a real Phantoms' Killer in several games last year and has also scored 5-5-10 thus far this season.
2012 first-round selection Stefan Matteau of the Albany Devils is the son of Stephane Matteau who eliminated the New Jersey Devils from the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals while playing for the New York Rangers. Matteau scored two overtime goals in that series including a wrap-around in double overtime of Game 7 beating Martin Brodeur.
Phantoms Spotlight - Mark Alt
Defenseman Mark Alt comes to the Phantoms from the University of Minnesota. And the Flyers organization are sure glad this big defensive prospect chose hockey over football. But he must have been tempted to stay on the gridiron. Alt is the son of former NFL Pro Bowl offensive lineman John Alt of the Kansas City Chiefs who played there from 1984-96. And Mark was a star quarterback in high school for the 2009 Minnesota state championship team, Cretin-Derham Hall High School.
Alt was still playing for the Golden Gophers in Minnesota when his rights were traded by the Carolina Hurricanes to Philadelphia. Alt came over along with goalie Brian Boucher in exchange for forward Luke Pither on January 13, 2013. In his first couple weeks of professional hockey last April he certainly made a big splash. Not normally known as a goal-producer, Alt scored in the 15th round of a marathon shootout on April 14, 2013 against Binghamton (picture below). It was the longest shootout in Phantoms' franchise history and the second-longest ever in the American Hockey League. Alt would go on to score his first "official" goal the following weekend.

25 Terrific Seasons
Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of only 12 other cities who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979 who won four Calder Cups in their 20-year run at the GFCC. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-2010 and are beginning their fifth season.
