Saturday, March 15 (7:00) - Adirondack Phantoms at Hershey Bears

Sunday, March 16 (3:00) - Adirondack Phantoms at Bridgeport Sound Tigers

The Phantoms are in the midst of playing five consecutive away games and this weekend will have the largest chunk of that swing when they travel to three different cities in three days during one of the more difficult travel-weekends of the season. It could have been a little easier if the two Connecticut games were scheduled back-to-back instead of with a Saturday sojourn to Hershey in between but sometimes it just works out that way.

The Adirondack Phantoms travel to Hartford on Friday and then they're off to Hershey for a Saturday night game against the Bears before wrapping it up with a Sunday afternoon game at the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. We're really logging the bus-miles over St. Patrick's Day Weekend!

March 11 - Chris VandeVelde recalled by Philadelphia Flyers

March 12 - Derek Whitmore loaned to Phantoms by Hershey

March 12 - Kris Newbury loaned to Hershey by Philadelphia

Welcome to the newest Phantom, Derek Whitmore. The 29-year-old left-winger joins the Phantoms this week after Adirondack and Hershey essentially swapped players with Kris Newbury headed off to Hershey on a loan by the Philadelphia Flyers.

Whitmore is in his sixth season of professional hockey and has 90 career goals in the AHL including 28 goals a couple seasons ago with Rochester. He's also a Rochester native. Whitmore scored four goals in a game on November 26, 2011 for the Rochester Americans against Hamilton.

Kris Newbury departs the Phantoms as the second-highest scorer on the team with 33 points including 14 goals. Adirondack will get to face their former teammate this weekend when the Phantoms travel to Hershey on Saturday night!

Saratoga Spine Player of the Week

Steven Delisle is our Saratoga Spine Player of the Week. The big, righty-shooting defenseman scored his first career AHL goal on Sunday afternoon. And it's about time, too! Many players have commented that "Diesel" has the hardest slapshot on the team! The native of Levis near Quebec City is in his third professional season but this is his first year spent entirely in the AHL. Previously, he had only played a combined 10 AHL games in two seasons in the Blue Jackets and Rangers systems and mostly spent his time in the ECHL honing his game. As captain of the Gatineau Olympiques in the QMJHL, he was teammates with Tye McGinn. And earlier in his Major Juniors career he played alongside Claude Giroux for two seasons with Gatineau in 2006-07 and 2007-08.

Last Week

Friday, March 7: Manchester Monarchs 4 - Adirondack Phantoms 2

The Phantoms pulled out all the stops in their efforts to overcome their deficit at league-leading Manchester including pulling their goalie late in the second period for an extra-attacker in a particularly bold move. But trailing 4-0 by the second intermission, the Phantoms were only able to get halfway there on goals by Bruno Gervais and Kris Newbury as they fell to the Monarchs 4-2. Both of Adirondack's goals came on the power play. Brian O'Neill posted a hat trick for the Monarchs in the game, the first to be scored against the Phantoms this season. J.F. Berube's 30 saves earned him the victory for the affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings while Yann Danis took the loss for Adirondack.

Saturday, March 8: Springfield Falcons 5 - Adirondack Phantoms 3

Adirondack's power play converted at a 3-for-7 clip on Saturday night in their comeback efforts for the second game in a row, their late surge would not be enough. Nick Cousins, Bruno Gervais and Brandon Manning all scored for the Phantoms. The 20-year-old Cousins has now scored in three consecutive weekends. And the Gervais goal extended his goal-streak to three straight games. But the high-flying Falcons offense put them in from all angles including a shorthanded goal by Cody Bass in the third that was something of a back-breaker after the Phantoms had climbed back into the game. Bass scored two goals and one assist for the Columbus Blue Jackets farm-club and Darryl Boyce scored one goal and two assists. Mike McKenna notched the victory over Yann Danis in the goaltender matchup of veterans who have been facing each other since the early 2000's when they played in the ECAC at St. Lawrence and Brown respectively

Sunday, March 9: Providence Bruins 9 - Adirondack Phantoms 3

It certainly wasn't the Phantoms day as a pair of Bruins rookies posted some gaudy numbers in their big win at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Rhode Island. Seth Griffith became just the fourth player in 18 years to score four goals in a game against the Phantoms. And a Boston Bruins prospect from Moscow, Russia, Alexander Khokhlachev, recorded one goal and five assists in a huge six-point night. For the Phantoms, Tyler Brown scored his second of the season early in the second period cutting the Providence lead to 2-1. And late in the game, Steven Delisle and Derek Mathers both scored their first of the season. The nine goals allowed equals the most ever surrendered by the Phantoms having also happened in a 9-0 loss at Hershey on November 29, 2008.

Top Scorers - Oscar Lindberg (14-23-37), JT Miller (12-22-34), Danny Kristo (18-15-33)

Info - The young group of potential future Rangers seems to have gelled of late. The Wolf Pack have gone 6-2-0 in their last eight games and they are 14-8-1 since ending a six-game losing streak on January 17. They went through a 5-19-4 stretch from late October through mid-January but very much have gotten their game together since then. Their leading scorer, Oscar Lindberg, is a 22-year-old rookie from Sweden enjoying success in his first season in North America. J.T. Miller is next in limited playing time with the Wolf Pack in his second pro season due to his call-ups to the Rangers where he has three goals in 28 games this year. His 12 goals and 34 points in the AHL have come in only 29 games. The first round selection in 2011 (#15 overall) led Team USA to the 2013 World Juniors Gold Medalin Ufa, Russia with a team-high nine points including seven assists. Former Phantoms and Flyers on the Wolf Pack include Danny Syvret, Darroll Powe and Aaron Asham.

Hershey Bears (30-22-7, 67 points) - Affiliation, Washington Capitals

Saturday, March 15 (7:00) - Giant Center, Hershey, PA

Last Meeting - February 1 - ADK 4 - HER 1

Top Scorers - Jeff Taffe (17-22-39), Brandon Segal (14-25-39), Chris Brown * (14-21-35)

Info - Derek Whitmore came to the Phantoms from Hershey on Wednesday and Kris Newbury was loaned to Bears from Adirondack as well. This will be their first game against their ex-teammates. Chris Brown was another recent pickup coming over from the Portland Pirates along with Rostislav Klesla as Phoenix picked up Martin Erat and John Mitchell from Washington at the trade-deadline.

Ninth-place Hershey trails the Albany Devils by three points for the final postseason position.

Adirondack won the last meeting against the Bears on February 1 in Philadelphia, 4-1. The Phantoms two other wins against the Bears have been in overtime; Brandon Manning scored the winner in the season opener on October 5 at Giant Center and Jason Akeson scored the only goal of the game on January 3 when Cal Heeter outdueled Riley Gill in a 1-0 thriller.

The Phantoms have an all-time record of 86-86-10 all-time against the Bears entering the 183rd all-time meeting between the two teams. An original member of the AHL in 1936, the Bears have 11 Calder Cup Championship Banners hanging in the rafters at Giant Center including their most recent three from titles in 2006, 2009 and 2010. Before the Philadelphia Phantoms started in 1996-97, the Hershey Bears were the top affiliate for the Philadelphia Flyers for 12 seasons from 1984-96.

Bridgeport Sound Tigers (26-27-6, 58 points) - Affiliation, New York Islanders

Sunday, March 16 (3:00) - Webster Bank Arena, Bridgeport, CT

Standings - 11th place, Eastern Conference

Season Series - Phantoms are 0-4-0 against Bridgeport. This is Game 5 out of 8.

Last Meeting - February 22, BRI 3 - ADK 2

Top Scorers - Alan Quine (6-18-24), Dallas Jackson (3-21-24), Johan Sundstrom (7-10-17)

Info - The Sound Tigers had run together an impressive streak winning 12 out of 14 including seven straight but as many of their top players have been receiving call-ups to the Islanders, Bridgeport has come crashing back to earth a little bit and are on a four-game losing streak entering the weekend. The last time the Phantoms faced the Sound Tigers on February 22 in Philadelphia in front of over 17,000 fans, Bridgeport was able to rally from behind in the third period to post a 3-2 win. Gone since then are goalie Anders Nilsson, and their three highest scorers, Ryan Strome (13-36-49), Anders Lee (22-19-41) and Mike Halmo (17-20-37).

All four of the games between the Phantoms and Sound Tigers this year have been one-goal nail-biters and in two of them the Sound Tigers rallied from behind in the third period to steal the victory.

After the loss of so many forwards, the New York Islanders went out and acquired Matt Mangene from the Flyers organization at the trade-deadline to help boost the roster. This will be the Long Island native's first game against his former teammates of the past two seasons.

25 Terrific Seasons

Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of just 9 other active markets who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979. In their 20-year tenure at the Glens Falls Civic Center through 1999, the Red Wings won four Calder Cups. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-10 and are in their fifth season bringing exciting AHL action to the North Country.
