A total of 64 players from 16 different states and British Columbia will vie for 25 roster spots next weekend when the Youngstown Phantoms Junior A hockey club conducts its final tryout camp at The Ice Zone.

The camp -- which will be open to the public free of charge -- will include nine games over a three-day period. Scheduled are games at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on both Friday, July 23 and Saturday, July 24, as well as an All-Star Game at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 25.

Bob Mainhardt, the Phantoms' head coach and general manager, said he will have 36 forwards, 20 defensemen and eight goaltenders in camp.

States represented will be Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Illinois, Alaska, Texas, Arizona, Virginia, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, California, and New Jersey.

A solid nucleus of players who helped Youngstown compile a 28-21-7 mark during its inaugural season in the North American Hockey League is part of the group.

"The players coming to our final tryout camp are an outstanding group. They are what we've determined to be the cream of the crop," Mainhardt said.

"Some are returning veterans, others are players who were selected from our three open tryout camps in June, plus other free agents that we've scouted during the past year. We had a successful inaugural season, but after having the luxury of a year of recruiting, we expect to put a more talented group on the ice this year."

The 25 players who earn roster spots at the final tryout camp will officially begin preparations for the 2004-05 NAHL season when they report to The Ice Zone for training camp on Monday, August 23.

Youngstown's preseason schedule will begin during the first week of September. The Phantoms' complete 56-game regular season schedule will be announced at a later date.
