Phantoms Fall to Madison 3-2

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - After the Youngstown Phantoms (3-2-0, 6 points) tied the game at 2, Eugene Fadyeyev beat Phantoms netminder Darion Hanson (14 saves) with a one-timer from the left dot for the game winning goal as the Madison Capitols defeated the Phantoms 3-2 at the Covelli Centre Saturday night to end Youngstown's three-game winning streak and split the weekend series.

"I thought the intensity was there for the most part," said Phantoms head coach Brad Patterson. "I liked our determination at the end, obviously we didn't get one to tie it up, but we had plenty of chances. There's room to grow and there's room to build on.

Youngstown opened the scoring at 8:52 of the first period as Alex Esposito fired home a rebound off a Brett Murray shot to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. "Murray put it on net, it came off his (Madison goaltender Dryden McKay) pad, he was out of position, and I just put it in," said Esposito of his first period goal.

A crazy sequence late in the first period would end with Madison tying the game. With three minutes remaining, Kamil Sadlocha fired a shot along the ice that appeared to hit the back pad of the net and pop back out, the goal light came on, but referee Justin Keegan waived "no goal". After two or three more cracks at it Mick Messner finally got the puck cleanly across the goal line, but Keegan once again waived the goal off claiming that Hanson was interfered with. However, after consulting with the goal judge, it was properly ruled that Sadlocha's initial shot was in the net and the Capitols were awarded with the game-tying goal.

Madison would take the lead 13:01 into the second period on Konur Peterson's first goal of the season, but the lead wouldn't last long. At 16:58 with McKay (29 saves) under heavy pressure from Phantoms forward Nicolas Werbik, McKay turned the puck over and Werbik was able to get the puck to the front of the net where Esposito tapped it into an empty cage for his second goal of the game.

"Alex is a special player and he's going to lead the ship for us this year," Patterson said of his assistant captain. "He's really developed into a good player. We don't have a lot of returning players and Alex has taken a lot of guys under his wing and he's helped them grow and he's going to continue to do that."

It didn't take long for Madison to retake the lead, as just 27 seconds after Esposito tied the game, Sadlocha found Fadyeyev for the game winner. Youngstown mounted a valiant effort in the last 1:11 with Hanson on the bench for the extra attacker, but were unable to get the game tying goal.

Youngstown returns to the ice next Friday as they travel to the shores of Lake Michigan to take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks on October 14 & 15. Puck drop for both games is slated for 7:15pm and the games can be viewed on HockeyTV.
