
Phantoms Drop Three in Michigan Swing

Youngstown fell behind early when former Phantom Brad Marek beat Mattias Sholl (30 saves) just 2:16 into the game. Jack Malone tied the game for Youngstown with a shorthanded goal 1:20 into the second period, but Muskegon got back-to-back goals from Danil Gushchin at 15:02 and 18:02 to grab a 3-1 lead at the second intermission. Grant Hindman netted his first USHL goal 3:08 into the third to bring the Phantoms back to within one, but Thomas Sinclair scored an empty netter with five seconds left in regulation to give the Lumberjacks a 4-2 victory.

TEAM USA (U17) 5, PHANTOMS 4 (SO)
The Phantoms fell behind 2-0 in the first 8:13 on goals by Logan Cooley and Rutger McGroarty, but Grant Hindman put home a rebound at 11:44 and Jack Silich finished a 2-on-1 at 14:23 to tie the game at 2-2. Cutter Gauthier sneaked one through Kyle Chauvette (25 saves) at 17:12 to give USA back the lead at the first intermission. After a scoreless second period, USA stretched their lead to 4-2 on a 5-on-3 power play goal from Ryan Chesley at 3:47, but Youngstown got deflection goals from Reilly Funk at 7:00 and Adam Eisele at 9:24 to tie the game and force overtime. Despite several great Youngstown chances, the Phantoms couldn't convert and the game was decided in the shootout. Gauthier was the only shooter of the first six to convert and Team USA snagged the victory.

Youngstown jumped on Team USA early when Georgii Merkulov scored on a nice deke just 1:11 into the game. USA answered back with three goals in the next 10 minutes to grab a 3-1 lead. Winter Wallace scored a power play goal at 15:19 to snap the USA scoring run and net his first in the USHL, cutting the NTDP lead to 3-2 at the first intermission. USA scored two goals in the first 3:37 of the second period, chasing Mattias Sholl (8 saves) from the Phantoms net, but Kyle Chauvette allowed in his first 4:07 on the ice and Team USA led 7-2. The Phantoms got two back on Jack Mesic's first USHL goal and a power play goal from Cole Burtch to get back within three at 7-4, but USA scored twice in the final 6:49 of the second and again at 14:45 of the third to cap off a 10-4 final. Jack Malone had his six-game scoring streak snapped.
