Dubuque Completes Two Win Weekend with 5-2 Victory
January 16, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
The Fighting Saints completed a two-win weekend with a 5-2 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers. Andrei Buyalsky scored twice, Reilly Herbst notched his second win in as many starts for Dubuque with 22 saves and the Saints have now won five of their last seven.
-Josh Luedtke, Des Moines captain, got things going with the first goal of the game. After a breakaway from Vincent Salice was turned away by Reilly Herbst, a quick wrister from the point beat the Saints netminder.
-Things got fairly chippy towards the end of the first period as both the Saints and Bucs traded some post-whistle blows. Nothing boiled over after one, however.
-Dubuque got just the start they needed in the second period, as Andrei Buyalsky scored to start things off. At about the midway mark of the period, PJ Fletcher notched his fifth of the year on a snipe off a two on one rush with Connor Kurth.
-Dubuque blitzed the Bucs at the end of the period to extend their lead to 4-1. Buyalsky scored a goal of the year candidate to put Dubuque up 3-1. Shortly after that, 11 seconds to be exact, Max Montes picked up his fourth of the season.
-Reilly Herbst stopped 18 in the first two periods and was one of the main reasons Dubuque was able to extend their lead, coming up with a few key stops when the Saints offense was struggling early.
-The two goals scored between Buyalsky and Montes were just 11 seconds apart. That is the quickest the Saints have scored back-to-back goals this season. The previous mark was 17 seconds apart.
-In the third period the Bucs got the start that they needed with a power play goal less than seven minutes in. John Prokop scored from the bottom of the right circle to pull the Buccaneers within two goals.
-After that, Dubuque and Herbst did a good job clamping down defensively. Dubuque allowed just four shots all third period as they limited the Bucs ability to get to the front of the net.
-The Saints ended the game on a high note as Matt Savoie scored his third goal of the weekend, pushing a loose puck in with under 30 seconds to go. Savoie was a bright spot in a weekend full of them as he picked up four points in his debut.
-The Saints will take a few weeks away from home after their two games this weekend, heading on the road for six games to end the month of January. Dubuque sees Waterloo and Green Bay twice in that span.
