Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Youngstown Phantoms take great pride in announcing that defenseman Tommy Parran has committed to play college hockey at Brown University following his USHL career. Parran, 18, is the 13th player on the current Phantoms roster to earn a NCAA Division I hockey scholarship.

"We couldn't be more proud for Tommy," head coach Anthony Noreen said. "Any time we can help a player achieve his dream - and Brown is Tommy's dream school - it's a special thing. Tommy's really earned this commitment and I think it's a great place to be for him."

A native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Parran has recorded an assist, eight penalty minutes and a minus-2 rating while appearing in 16 games for the Phantoms this season. He recorded his first career USHL point Nov. 9 against the Fargo Force.

Youngstown's 21st round pick in the 2012 USHL Entry Draft, Parran registered 3-15-18 and 22 penalty minutes last season with the Cleveland Baron Under-18 AAA team. The 5-foot-11 blue liner also appeared in three affiliate games with the Phantoms in 2012-13.

"Tommy's worked his way up our depth chart on the back end very quickly and been very consistent," Noreen said. "He's been coachable and listened to everything we've said.

"Tommy also takes his education very seriously and he's been willing to help other guys in that area. He's been a huge asset to our team, both on an off the ice."

First established in 1897, the Brown men's hockey team is part of the prestigious Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, which includes other Ivy League institutions such as Harvard, Princeton and the defending national champion Yale. The Bears have made the NCAA tournament four times in program history and are in their fifth season under head coach Brendan Whittet.

"Brown's an Ivy League school and excellent place to get an education," Noreen said. "It's also a great program that's on the rise and heading in right direction. I think it's the perfect situation for Tommy."

The Phantoms return to action this weekend when they travel west to take on the Lincoln Stars Friday, Nov. 22 at 8:05 p.m. EST and the Sioux City Musketeers Saturday, Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on Sports Radio 1240 and webcast online on FASTHockey. Pregame coverage begins 15 minutes prior to puck drop.
