Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN- Matt Petrone was looking for a first pitch fastball in the bottom of the 15th and got what he wanted. The left fielder rifled a line drive down the first base line that was misplayed by Richard Salgado and allowed two runs to score and give the RailCats a 6-5 win.

The Gary SouthShore RailCats (26-23) win ended the nine-game win streak for the Wichita Wingnuts (31-17). The RailCats needed the win badly as they tried to avoid a sweep and a six-loss homestand.

This was the third 15-inning game of the season for the RailCats who improved to 6-4 in extra-inning games. The 4:47 minute game was seven minutes shorter than the longest of the season.

Things didn't look good for Gary SouthShore heading to the bottom of the 15th. The Wingnuts scored a run in to top half off of reliever Santiago Rodriguez. Christian Stringer walked and scored on a Zack Cox double.

Alex Crosby led off the bottom half of the 15th with a double. After a Frank Martinez fly out, Jose Gonzalez singled and Crosby moved to third. With the tying run at third and the go-ahead at first, Petrone pulled the first pitch he saw off of Jesse Pratt into right field. Crosby scored easily and Gonzalez went to third. The right fielder Salgado misplayed the ball off of the wall and Gonzalez went home to score easily and end the game.

Karl Triana pitched nine innings and allowed four runs on four hits. Remarkably, the RailCats pitchers did not strike out a batter until the 11th inning. Jorge de Leon registered four K's over four innings of scoreless relief. Travis McGee handled the 14th before Rodriguez got the win in the 15th.

EJ Devarie and Alex Crosby had three hits apiece and Petrone added a couple. Anthony Checky was 1-5 with two walks in his first game as a RailCat in 2016.

The win put the RailCats at 2-5 for the homestand. The team stays one game back of Lincoln for the division lead heading into a seven-game road trip. The RailCats play tomorrow night at 7:02 in Fargo, ND with coverage beginning at 6:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
