Wichita Wingnuts News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Wichita Wingnuts had their nine-game winning streak halted Sunday, as they fell 5-4 in 15 innings to the Gary SouthShore RailCats at U.S. Steel Yard.
With the game having been tied since the seventh, Wichita (31-17) broke the 4-4 tie in the top of the 15th. Christian Stringer drew a one-out walk in the frame against Santiago Rodriguez (4-4), then acrobatically avoided a Jose Gonzalez tag to score on a Zack Cox double to put the Wingnuts in front.
In the bottom of the frame, Alex Crosby got things started for the RailCats (26-23), doubling off of Jesse Pratt (3-2). One out later, Gonzalez singled to put the tying and winning runs on for Matt Petrone. Petrone singled to right to bring in Crosby, and after an error on the play, Gonzalez scored too, to give Gary the walk-off victory.
The Wingnuts scored first for the fourth straight time in the series, plating a pair in the opening inning. The first two Wichita batters reached on a walk and a single, then each moved up a base when Karl Triana balked. Brent Clevlen brought the first run in with a ground out, before a Matt Chavez two-out single made it 2-0.
The visitors doubled their lead in the fourth, as an error and a wild pitch extended the lead to four.
Gary pulled one back in the sixth, before drawing even in the seventh. Jeremy Hamilton knocked a pinch-hit two-run single, and E.J. Devarie followed with a sacrifice fly to level the score.
After the RailCats tied the score, neither team had much in the way of threats until the 15th. The Wingnuts went hitless from the fourth inning until the 12th, with the run ending on a bunt single by Leo Vargas that was erased on a double play.
Gary loaded the bases with one out in their half of the 12th, but Fabian Roman induced a double play to get Wichita out of the jam.
After an off day on Monday, the Wingnuts return home Tuesday for a doubleheader against the Joplin Blasters at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Right-hander Jon Link (6-2, 3.58) will start for Wichita in game one, while Joplin has yet to announce their starter. First pitch for game one is set for 5:05, and game two will follow roughly 30 minutes after the completion of game one. Both games can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
