Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL-In his Florida State League debut Nick Petree limited the Hammerheads to just one run over seven innings as Palm Beach came away with a 7-3 win over Jupiter on Tuesday at Roger Dean Stadium.
The Cards jumped out to a lead off of Jupiter starter Josh Hodges in the third inning. Alex Mejia reached on an infield single then went to third when Ildemaro Vargas singled to right-center. Mejia would score the first run of the game when Hodges threw a wild pitch.
Charlie Tilson would then slap a single to left before a Starlin Rodriguez plated Vargas with a single.
Tilson would later score on a double play ball as Palm Beach took a 3-0 lead.
The Hammerheads would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Ryan Goetz reached on a one-out double and Matt Juengel drove him in with a single.
The Birds would strike right back in the top of the fourth when Mejia hit a single which plated Anthony Garcia, who had doubled.
In the sixth Palm Beach began to pull away when David Washington reached on a leadoff walk, Breyvic Valera singled in-between first and second, and Garcia doubled off the glove of the left fielder to plate Washington.
That would be the night for Hodges as he was replaced by Frankie Reed. Reed got Mejia to ground out but Valera scored on the play. Vargas would then plate Garcia when he pulled a single into left to make it 7-1.
Petree would be pulled from the game following the seventh inning after he allowed just the one run on six hits with six strikeouts.
With Petree out of the game the Hammerheads would get a pair of runs back in the bottom of the eighth highlighted by a RBI triple by Juengel, who finished the night 2-for-4 with two RBI, but it was too late for a comeback as Mitch Harris tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to finish the game.
Juengel continued to feast on Palm Beach pitching as he has collected at least two hits in every game against the Cardinals this year. He is batting .520 (13-25) against the Birds on the season.
With the win the Cardinals took the second Fins vs. Feathers series of the year but Jupiter still leads the season series 4-2. The teams won't play again until June 16th, the first series following the FSL All-Star Break.
The Hammerheads will begin a two-game series with the Fort Myers Miracle on Wednesday at Roger Dean Stadium. The teams will then play a pair of games at Hammond Stadium starting Friday night. Wednesday's first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
