Clearwater Threshers News Release

Colin Kleven turned in his strongest outing of the season, while Colton Murray locked down his second save in as many days as the Clearwater Threshers took down the Brevard County Manatees 4-2 on Tuesday.

For the second straight game, it was the Threshers (7-22) who jumped on the board first.

Art Charles drove a double to right to lead off the second inning against Manatees' starter Tyler Wagner (3-1). Gabriel Lino followed by lining a single to right to set up men at the corners.

After Chad Carman popped out, Brian Pointer lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Charles, but Lino was thrown out by left fielder Victor Roache to end the inning with the Threshers up 1-0.

Kleven and Wagner traded scoreless innings until Brevard County (16-15) managed to pull even in the sixth. A pair of singles put runners at first and third, before a ground ball fielder's choice permitted Nathan Orf to score from third.

Anthony Phillips would put the Threshers ahead for good in the seventh. Lino drew a leadoff walk, and Carman executed a sacrifice bunt to push the go-ahead runner to second. Pointer pulled a grounder to first to advance Lino over to third base, and Phillips came through with a single to center to make it 2-1 Threshers.

Kleven (1-3) gave way to Luis Paulino after hurling six innings of one-run ball. The right-hander did not walk a batter while scattering six hits and striking out two to earn his first victory.

Pointer gave the Threshers some valuable cushion in the ninth inning.

After Carman reached on an error by third baseman Mike Garza, Pointer clanked a home run off the foul pole just over the wall in right to give the Threshers a 4-1 advantage.

Paulino set down the first eight Manatees he faced before Brevard County mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth. A walk and back-to-back singles cut the lead to 4-2, before Murray entered the game seeking the final out. Murray threw just one pitch, and got Alfredo Rodriguez to line out to Pointer in right to end the ballgame.

Clearwater returns to the west coast on Wednesday, as the Threshers try to make it three straight wins when they take on the Dunedin Blue Jays at 6:30 p.m. The call can be hard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.

The Threshers will return home to Bright House Field on Thursday for Ladies Night and Thirsty Thursday. Women 21 and older can sign up for the free Ladies Club and receive their own martini glass, while all drinks are 2-for-1 as part of Thirsty Thursday.
