Brantford Bulldogs News Release

HAMILTON, ONTARIO. The Hamilton Bulldogs returned home Saturday for an afternoon matchup playing host to their division rival, Peterborough Petes. Peterborough was fresh off a 2- 1 defeat in Kingston, while the Bulldogs were searching looking to get back in the win column on the end of their weekend back-to-back.

The game got off to tentative start with the two teams feeling one another out, as the first period had few whistles, no penalties, and no score after 20 minutes of play. Hamilton started off the game with some offensive zone possession but couldn't squeak one past visiting netminder Michael Simpson. The Petes, meanwhile, maintained some offensive zone time but couldn't get one past Matteo Drobac. The shots after the opening frame ended 9-7 in favor of the visiting Petes.

The middle frame proved to be more intense between the rivals. Early in the period, Brendan Anderson got a great chance in close that was denied by Simpson. Shortly after, J.R. Avon was able to get on a partial break, but Lucas Moore was right on his tail, Avon tried to chip it over the shoulder of Drobac but the Bulldogs netminder was able to scoop it in his glove right before Moore came crashing in hard, knocking Drobac down and the net loose. Both were uninjured on the high-speed collision. Shortly thereafter, Bulldogs center Patrick Thomas had possession behind the Petes goal and fed Cole Brown with a beautiful net front pass but was denied by Simpson sprawling across the crease, keeping the game scoreless. After a whistle, Bulldogs defenseman Noah Roberts was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for spearing the Petes Sam McCue putting the Dogs down to 5 defensemen the rest of the way Peterborough took advantage of the long powerplay, as Petes rookie Jack Van Volsen was able to pounce on a rebound to make it a 1-0 game with 3:08 remaining on Robert's penalty.

Bulldogs' defenseman Noah Van Vliet was able to pick up the puck and breeze by the Peterborough defense for a great shorthanded opportunity, but Simpson said no yet again. The Bulldogs were able to kill the rest of the penalty and nabbed a couple great chances of their own, but the middle frame ended with the Petes ahead 1-0.

The final frame began with Hamilton on the penalty kill for 1:54 after Cole Brown took a holding penalty late in the second. The Petes were able to once again capitalize on the powerplay with J.R. Avon squeaking one through the five-hole of Drobac. A short 45 seconds later however, Bulldogs rookie Callum Cheynowski threw a puck on net and captain Logan Morrison jumped on a Cole Brown deflection to make the game 2-1 with 17:35 remaining in the game. The game stayed with that score line until 3:20 left in the game, when Petes forward Justin DeZoete received a beautiful pass and tucked it past Drobac to make it 3-1. Shortly after, Chase Stillman headed off for 2 for tripping, and Bulldogs took advantage of their own man advantage. Logan Morrison fed the puck across to Avery Hayes who one-timed it past the Michael Simpson to make it a one goal game yet again with just over 2 minutes remaining in the game. Drobac raced to the bench for an extra attacker, but Petes captain Tucker Robertson fired it into the empty net for a 4-2 lead. Peterborough hit the back of the net one more time through Nick Lardis' power-play marker at 19:54 to end the game, a 5-2 Petes win.

The Hamilton Bulldogs are back in action next weekend in Oshawa on Friday night with a 7:35 start, and then back home for a Saturday afternoon Halloween themed special against the visiting Sarnia Sting, with the puck dropping at 4:00pm.
