Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - Looking to take advantage of a quick turnaround, the Erie Otters would come into Saturday night's game looking to wipe their memory of a 5-1 loss to Owen Sound on Friday. With Marshall Nicholls in net for the first time in a week, the Otters would look to return to the winning ways. With Owen Sound standing atop the Western Conference standings in the Ontario Hockey League, it would be a mission of continuing what's working for the team from the bayshore.
Penalties and shots a-plenty would start off the first period, as the Otters and Attack would combine for 16 total shots in the first half of the frame. It would be the defenses and goaltenders who would be the heroes of the first 12 minutes, with everything being stopped by the netminders. In the final half of the period, nothing would change on the scoresheet, as Nicholls and Corbin Votary would make saves where needed. With the Otters unsuccessful on three power play opportunities, they would commit a late penalty to go into the second. Erie would lead in shots 16-11, but be held scoreless in a 0-0 game.
Much of the story of the first would remain same for the second, as the Otters would continue to work on the penalty kill. After killing the initial penalty from Cohen, Kaleb Smith would go off for four minutes for a spearing. The Otters would go four-on-four as Owen Sound would commit a penalty, but it would be during this even-strength, undermanned opportunity that Cal Uens (1) would strike for his first of the season, 5:33 into the frame. It would take nearly 10 minutes, but Erie would finally strike back as Spencer Sova (2) would fire a quick-wrister through the five-hole of Votary to make it a 1-1 game. 40 minutes in the book, and the Midwest Division foes would be locked up in a 1-1 game; Erie leading in shots 27-22.
Tense would be the term to describe the opening portion of the third and final frame from the Erie Insurance Arena, with a 1-1 tie moving from the end of the second. After a shotless start to the period, Erie's offense would begin to take charge. 8:47 into the frame, Brett Bressette (4) would grab the eventual game-winner with an effort play in front to give Erie a 2-1 lead. Less than a minute later, Erie would grab a quick one off the faceoff as Liam Gilmartin (3) would redirect a shot from Christian Kyrou to give Erie a 3-1 lead. It would be a mad dash to close out the period, as the Otters would hold off a desperate Owen Sound effort enroute to stealing the home ice win, 3-1. Marshall Nicholls would stop 24/25 enroute to his first win of the season, and earn Second Star honors. Owen Sound's four-game winning streak would be snapped with the loss.
Thus closes out the first three-in-three of the season for the Otters, as they prepare to do it all again next weekend. The final weekend of October will kick off on Friday night at The Aud in Kitchener, as the Otters take on the Rangers. Erie will return home for a Saturday against the Windsor Spitfires, and Sunday against Kitchener.
