Peterborough Petes News Release
(Peterborough, ON) - The Ontario Hockey League's first-ever draft lottery presented locally by Fully Promoted has announced that the Petes will be selecting 6th overall at the 2021 OHL Priority Selection on Friday, June 4.
"We are excited to have the 6th overall selection in this year's draft," said General Manager Michael Oke. "We know this has been a unique year for draft-eligible players and we look forward to building for the future. Despite the challenges, our scouts have done a terrific job gaining information about players by using extensive video and attending modified games, practices, and skill sessions when it was deemed safe."
The Petes selected Mark Reeds (1977) and former captain Matt Puempel (2009) with their previous 6th overall selections. Reeds won two J. Ross Robertson Cups and was a member of the 1979 roster that won the Petes' lone Memorial Cup team. Across 234 games as a Pete, Reeds collected 202 points.
In Puempel's rookie and sophomore seasons, he registered over 60 points and captained the 2012 team for half the season. The Petes alumnus was drafted to the Ottawa Senators in 2011 and spent seven years splitting his time between the nation's capital and their affiliate, the Binghamton Senators. This past season Puempel played for the Malmo Redhawks of the Swedish Hockey League.
For the first time since the implementation of the annual Priority Selection online in 2001, the event will be held over the course of two days, with rounds 1-3 being held on Friday, June 4 beginning at 7:00 pm. Rounds 4-15 will take place on Saturday, June 5 beginning at 9:00 am.
