Bryan Petersen led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a home run, providing the difference in the New Orleans Zephyrs' 3-2 win over the Albuquerque Isotopes in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night at Zephyr Field.

The home run, Petersen's third of the season, was the bookend to his big night. He also doubled home a pair of runs in the first inning to get the Zephyrs on the board, giving him 16 doubles this season, seventh-most in the Pacific Coast League.

Zephyrs starter Doug Mathis went 6 1/3 innings and did not factor into the decision, and tightroped his way out of a first-inning jam. The first three Isotopes batters reached base on a single, walk and fielder's choice, but Mathis struck out Alex Castellanos and induced a double play from Jeremy Moore to keep Albuquerque off the scoreboard.

New Orleans quickly took advantage in the bottom of the inning. Kevin Mattison by striking out, but a wild pitch by Isotopes starter Blake Johnson allowed Mattison to scamper all the way to second base. A single by Gil Velazquez put runners at the corners before Petersen's drive into the alley in left-center gave the Z's a 2-0 lead.

The Isotopes knotted the score in the third. Dee Gordon placed a bunt single up the third base line, and Elian Herrera reached on a missed catch on a force attempt at second base, and both runners scored on Matt Angle's single to right field.

Mathis settled down from there, retiring 10 of the next 11 batters. Both the Zephyrs and Isotopes got leadoff doubles in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, but neither were able to break through until Petersen's home run in the eighth off Javy Guerra (0-3).

Chris Hatcher retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up his 18th save, which leads all of Minor League Baseball. Jonathan Albaladejo (1-2) worked around a one-out single in the eighth to earn his first win of the year.

The Z's and Isotopes continue the series on Friday at 7 p.m.
