DES MOINES, Iowa - The Round Rock Express (34-26) shut out the Iowa Cubs (25-33) 6-0 in the series opener Thursday night at Principal Park.

Both starting pitchers were impressive on the mound, holding each team to one hit through five innings.

The Express offense finally got to I-Cubs starter Guillermo Moscoso in the sixth inning. With one out, center fielder Engel Beltre worked a seven-pitch at-bat for a walk. Catcher Robinson Chirinos hit a single to right field to put runners on first and second. Two batters later shortstop Yangervis Solarte ripped his eighth home run of the year to break up the 0-0 tie and give the E-Train a three-run lead.

Yoshinori Tateyama replaced Express starter Brad Mills in the sixth inning. Mills worked 5.0 complete innings, giving up just one hit and two walks, striking out three. Tateyama gave up a leadoff double to the Cubs' Brett Jackson, but recorded three consecutive outs, stranding him at second.

Round Rock put up three more runs in the eighth. Beltre hit his second home run in five games, a solo shot, to lead off the inning. Chirinos singled and scored on a double off the bat of Aaron Cunningham. Two batters later, Joey Butler hit a RBI-single to score Cunningham and give the Express a 6-0 lead.

After giving up a two out double in the eighth, Tateyama was replaced by left-hander and former I-Cub Nate Robertson. He got former Express outfielder Brian Bogusevic to strike out to end the inning.

Iowa threatened again in the ninth, putting two men on thanks to a fielding error and a walk. However, Robertson recorded the final two outs of the game and preserved the Express' sixth shutout win of the year.

Mills picked up his sixth win, tying Josh Lindblom for the team lead. Iowa starter Moscoso took the loss to drop to 2-3 on the season.

The Express and I-Cubs face off again tomorrow night at Principal Park. LHP Martin Perez (2-1, 3.00 ERA) will toe the rubber for Round Rock while Iowa sends a southpaw of their own in Chris Rusin (4-5, 3.82 ERA) to the mound. Round Rock will return to Dell Diamond on June 10 to open a four-game set against the Albuquerque Isotopes at 7:05 p.m. For more information on the Express, visit www.RoundRockExpress.com or call (512) 255-2255.
