Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, February 19, 2009 - Portland LumberJax forward Peter Morgan has been named a reserve for the 2009 National Lacrosse League All-Star Team, the league announced today. Morgan will join goalie Matt Disher and defenseman Brodie Merrill, who will represent the Jax on the West Division All-Star Team. It was also announced today that Assistant Coach and Community Relations and Creative Design Director Dallas Eliuk will coach the West Division All-Stars and legendary forward Jim Veltman will coach the East. Eliuk and Veltman will be inducted into the NLL Hall of Fame during All-Star weekend. The NLL's ninth All-Star Game will be played on Saturday, March 7th at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado at 6 p.m. PST.
This is the second All-Star selection for Morgan, who played in his first All-Star Game as a rookie in 2002 and scored two goals and collecting eight loose balls. The 6'6" sharp shooter is leading the team with 14 goals scored. The Port Coquitlam, British Columbia native has also tallied seven assists and collected 31 loose balls.
"Peter is very deserving of an All-Star Game selection," said Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan. "I like to see major impact guys be chosen as All-Stars and he has been just that for the Jax. I don't know if there is a more versatile player in the NLL. Everything the coaching staff and I have asked him to do he has done and done it well. He's played defense, offense, runs the floor and has played in all special teams situations. He's also had a real propensity to score big goals for us."
Morgan has scored at least two goals in every game he's appeared this season and is averaging 3.5 points-per-game. 12 of his 14 goals this season came in January, which was the highest goal scoring month of his Portland career.
Eliuk, the game's greatest goalie, retired after a distinguished 18-year playing career as the NLL's all-time saves leader with 6,356 saves. The Vancouver, British Columbia native won four Champion's Cups, earned nine All-Pro Awards and was named Most Valuable Player of two Champion's Cups.
Eliuk played his first 15 seasons in Philadelphia before finishing his career in Portland. Eliuk and his wife, 105.1 the Buzz's Daria are expecting their first child this spring.
The NLL All-Star Game and Hall of Fame induction ceremony will air live on the NLL Network. To access the broadcast, go to NLL.com.
The Jax continue their homestand on Saturday, February 28th at 7:30 p.m. against the Philadelphia Wings.
