Charleston RiverDogs News Release

AUGUSTA, Ga.- RiverDogs starter Kelvin Perez penned 7.0 immaculate innings of two-hit baseball in leading the Charleston RiverDogs to a 4-0 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets in front of 5,381 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium Saturday evening.

Charleston notches its first road win of the season to improve to 5-5, while Augusta falls to 7-3.

The Dominican native Perez gave up a second inning single to Tommy Joseph and a seventh inning double for the only blemishes on his line. The 6'1" right-hander walked just one batter and fanned a career-high nine in helping the RiverDogs collect their first shutout since a 4-0, 13-inning win over Rome on Sept. 3, 2009.

After retiring the first eight batters of the game on five strikeouts, Charleston posted three straight two-out hits against starter Zack Wheeler (0-2) to take a 2-0 lead in the third. Kelvin Castro singled, darted home on Jimmy Paredes' RBI double and Paredes did the same on DeAngelo Mack's blistering RBI double to centerfield.

Charleston added another run in the fourth for a 3-0 lead, after he walked Rob Lyerly, Taylor Grote and Zoilo Almonte in succession to start the frame. With Garrison Lassiter batting, Lyerly screamed home on a wild pitch from reliever Jose Valdez, but that's all the RiverDogs plated in the frame.

Wheeler suffered his second loss in a row in just 3.0 innings of work, surrendering three runs on three hits with three walks and the five punchouts.

Mack registered his second run-scoring hit of the game, a RBI single in the seventh, to score Paredes for a 4-0 RiverDogs lead.

Augusta made things extremely interesting in the ninth, loading the bases with one out against closer Ryan Flannery, but the Carlstadt, N.J. native induced the final two outs to leave the bags full and get his third save of the year.

Paredes and Mack had two hits each for Charleston to lead an eight-hit performance, while Augusta's five hits came from five different players.

The third game of the four-game series is set for a 2 p.m. first pitch on Sunday. Charleston sends southpaw Shaeffer Hall (0-0, 0.77 ERA) to the hill, while Augusta gives the ball to right-hander to Kyle Vazquez (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
