Kody Hinze hit a grand slam and a two-run homer to lead the Lexington Legends past the Greenville Drive 12-8 Friday night in a rain-shortened game at Applebee's Park. The game was called after Greenville batted in the top of the seventh inning.
Hinze gave Lexington a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Jose Altuve walked to lead off. Jiovanni Mier followed with an infield hit, and Altuve advanced to third when J.D. Martinez flied to right. Jake Goebbert then walked to load the bases and Hinze followed with a blast over the wall in right center field.
The lead didn't last long. Greenville rallied for five runs in the second inning, two scoring on a double by Wilfredo Pichardo. Greenville took a 7-4 lead in the fourth when two runs scored on a throwing error by third baseman Jonathan Meyer.
Hinze's two-run shot to left in the third closed the gap to 7-6. Later in the inning, a double by Meyer, who had three hits, an infield single by Miguel Arrendell, a wild pitch, and a single by Grant Hogue tied the game at 7-7. Arrendell scored on a double steal, and Hogue came home on Mier's double to give Lexington a 9-7 lead.
Jake Goebbert's two-run double in the fifth made it 11-7, and Rene Garcia hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the sixth with the bases empty for Lexington's final run. Greenville added a run in the top of the seventh before the game was stopped.
Nathan Pettus (1-0), who joined Lexington from extended spring training earlier in the day when outfielder Brian Kemp was placed on the disabled list due to an ankle injury, picked up the win after retiring nine straight batters through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Greenville reliever Pedro Perez (0-1) was the losing pitcher.
The two teams continue the series with a 7:05 game Saturday night at Applebee's Park.
