Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - On Fireworks Night at Lake Olmstead Stadium, the Augusta GreenJackets forgot to break out the big blasts of their own in a 4-0 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs.
Charleston starter Kelvin Perez stymied GreenJackets hitters through seven masterful innings. Perez (1-0) didn't allow a run and yielded just two hits and a walk with nine strikeouts to pace the RiverDogs.
Zack Wheeler dominated early for the GreenJackets - retiring the first eight hitters he faced - before running into trouble in the third. After a two-out single by Kelvin Castro, the RiverDogs got back-to-back doubles from Jimmy Paredes and DeAngelo Mack, each driving in a run.
Wheeler (0-2) departed after walking the bases loaded to open the fourth inning. He tossed three innings and allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. A Jose Valdez wild pitch brought Charleston's third run of the night in the fourth. The Dogs capped their scoring on Mack's second hit of the game - a run-scoring single in the seventh inning.
Trailing by four, the Jackets got lead off hits in the seventh and eighth before the side was retired in order. Then after one out, a walk and two singles, Tommy Joseph stepped up as the tying run with the bases loaded. After Joseph lined out, Ryan Lollis grounded out to end the game.
On Sunday afternoon, Kyle Vazquez (1-0, 0.00) will work against Charleston's Shaeffer Hall (1-0, 0.00) in the third game of the series. First pitch will come at 2:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 1:50 p.m. on WRDW-AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
